Universal Compassion ❀️

In my opinion, our compassion is best when it embraces all sentient beings.

Reasons:

1.) Our suffering is all the same whether we’re good or bad.
2.) At best, suffering does the world no good, and at the worst, it makes the world worse for everyone
3.) Ultimately, the “bad people” are like victims of their circumstances- this is not to say we have no choice, but our choices are often influenced by various factors, our mental health, our life circumstances, our upbringing, our culture,  our privilege or lack of… and sometimes without us fully realizing the consequences or that we have other options. I don’t believe that under the best circumstances, anyone would essentially choose to be a terrible person.
4.) Our own minds are more peaceful when we wish others well.

This post is inspired by all the (understandable) enthusiasm I have been seeing about Donald Trump’s medical condition and all the wishes that more bad things happen to him.

I don’t believe he can be rehabilitated. I believe he’s a bad person and that there’s no hope for him. I am not one of those loving people who believe everyone is truly good and that everyone can be rehabilitated with lots of love and care. I think Donald Trump was born with the predisposition for being a “bad person.”

His condition reminds me of my condition, but mine is not serious. It can be painful but is not life or health threatening. I have jugular vein insufficiency and insufficiency of a few other veins in my neck because of an obstruction in my head. The obstruction is also not life threatening. The blood leaving my brain to go to my heart through these veins, can’t get there because of the veins being impinged on. So, the blood backs up into my head. Many veins are all doing the same job, so it doesn’t matter. It’s harmless. The blood is still getting to my heart.

I have recurring unbearable headaches associated with it, though. The headaches are 10/10 pain, at least within their own context. I guess when compared to some other kinds of pain, they would be less than 10 on a pain level scale. But like within the context of headaches. They bring me to the floor. I have been bedridden for days sometimes. I think it’s the obstruction itself that causes the headaches, not the vein insufficiency or blood backing up. That can cause severe pain, too, though, among many other things. When I have these headaches or think of them, my empathy for others becomes boundless.

Mine doesn’t cause swelling, but you can see the jugular vein bulging out of my neck. I had to have scans a couple of years ago to see why it was suddenly protruding and so prominent. The doctors were concerned it could be a blood clot somewhere causing it. But it turned out to be nothing serious. I convinced myself I was dying and had six months left to live (certain kinds of cancer can cause it to bulge, and when it’s to that point, the average person only lives around six months. I convinced myself I had that), and my heart rate and blood pressure were through the roof in a doctor’s office. They had to tell me to calm down and to stay off Google πŸ˜†

I don’t want him as President, he’s absolutely repulsive. He has no redeeming qualities. None.
But I don’t wish him or anyone to be sick. I don’t believe anyone deserves to be sick any more than I do. We are all equal in our suffering and in our comfort. The goodness or lack of it in us, is irrelevant in this context. If Donald Trump was afflicted with one of my headaches, he would suffer the same as me. All sentient beings essentially want to live and be healthy. We all suffer the same. The headaches this brings me, I would wish on absolutely no one. I literally cannot bear the mere thought of someone else, even him, enduring what I do when a headache hits.

I believe the world would be a significantly better place if everyone was happy (not at the expense of others, but sincerely happy) & healthy. It’s people who are unhappy and hurt who hurt others. Happy, well rounded, people don’t go around tormenting anyone else. There are absolutely people who get off on hurting others (he’s one of them), it makes them happy. But that’s not genuine happiness, it’s happiness that often relieves whatever unhappiness that afflicts them. If they were genuinely happy, they would not inflict pain upon others.

❀️

Most of us have probably experienced this on a lesser scale, like for example, when we’re in a bad mood so we get snippy with someone when it’s not warranted. It’s displaced anger or annoyance. We may not usually do this, even when unhappy, but most of us have probably more than once been less than kind, when in a bad mood, to someone who did not deserve it. These people, though, live a life of that because they are always unhappy and are the kind of people who want others to suffer, too.

I don’t believe that everyone is basically good. But I think their lack of goodness is the result of their own suffering. Some people are born (and maybe upbringing often plays a part, but I think they have inherent or genetic inclination for it to begin with) never developing basic human abilities/emotions, like the ability for empathy and compassion. This does not result in true happiness. It results in the desire to hurt others, it brings them a superficial happiness. Donald Trump hurts everyone. And he gets off on it. He loves it. But we see he’s not a happy person.

Why do we think bitter, miserable people often insist on hurting others? Because it brings them relief or pleasure. They are seeking what we all seek. It’s just for them, their suffering influences it.

Wishing further suffering on them has no practical benefits. If anything, it only serves to perpetuate their abuse as their own suffering is the source of it anyway, and it doesn’t make our own mind any more positive or loving. It may bring us a moment of satisfaction again & again. But I don’t think it has any real value. At least wishing others well has potential to bring us inner peace, and then we’re more likely to interact positively with others.

Not all seemingly terrible people really are. Unlike Donald Trump, some can change. It’s dependent on the reason they are how they are.

I believe that if we were all given the choice before being born, to be a good and happy person or a bad and suffering person who goes to great lengths to inflict that suffering upon others, all of us would have chosen to be happy and healthy and good and someone who wishes that for every other being as well. Ultimately, no one chooses to be what Donald Trump is. Yes, he chooses to do bad things within the confines of the existence he was given. He’s a despicable person. Nothing changes that. But I don’t believe for a second that he would have chosen this if the uni-verse gave him a choice when he was still a “clean slate” if ever he even was. He was born suffering or was brought up to suffer, and now he wants the rest of us to suffer along with him.

Some people’s suffering inspires deeper empathy for others, but for others, it doesn’t, it has the opposite effect and inhibits empathy instead.

As the cliche goes, “Hurt people, hurt people.”

Suffering begets more suffering.

This doesn’t mean we always have to speak warm & kindly to everyone. Sometimes, people have to be told off & judged harshly and not get what they want. Some people need a firm ass kicking. It just means we don’t have to wish suffering upon them.

I believe it does no good to wish pain & suffering on others.

I wish he was happy & healthy and not born a psychopath. Me wishing that does no practical good either, though. But I think the world would be better and most of us more peaceful if more of us wished good things on people instead of bad.

People have countered my sentiment, saying anger & hatred fuel us to act for good. While that is sometimes true, compassion & love can fuel us just the same. Anger & hatred feel unpleasant and can get out of control and influence us to do things that are destructive to ourselves and others. Love & compassion can never go wrong. As I said, it doesn’t necessarily have to be warm and sappy and “feel good” feelings. It can be firm & harsh but still love. When anger & hatred frequently consume us, it leads to stress, depression, anxiety, physical ailments. When compassion & love consume us, it only leads to good.

I don’t know the source of this quote, the name here may not be accurate. I also see it attributed to Shantideva.

I have wished bad things on people before, and I probably will again. But that’s not the philosophy I hold, it’s when I give into raw emotion that I allow to overtake me and blind me. I always find my way back to me, the authentic me who knows the truth, that wishing suffering on others isn’t the way.

If I could, I would flip a switch and turn all the suffering in the world off, even for “bad people.” I would in a heartbeat.

Think about it, there must be higher love
Down in the heart or hidden in the stars above
Without it, life is a wasted time
Look inside your heart, I’ll look inside mine
Things look so bad everywhere
In this whole world, what is fair?
We walk blind, and we try to see
Falling behind in what could be

Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love
Where’s that higher love I keep thinking of?

I can sense your presence in my heart ❀️ {sort of repost}

And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like ‘I love you.’

I recently had a strange experience. It’s so surreal and strange and unique to me that I don’t think anyone else can understand because to understand, you would have to be intimately familiar with my previous experience. And no one is. I kept it a secret for years until finally writing a very long post about it a couple years ago.

It’s a story that haunted me for years and needed telling, though. I thought I would take it to my grave. It was a cathartic experience writing it out and healed me in ways I did not realize still needed healing. It’s an experience that affected my self esteem and to this day, still does. It was agonizing, mortifying. Heartbreaking. I thought I could never get over it. It took me years to recover.

I’m going to share some of my story here.

Much of this is straight out of a previous post for some context, and then I share my strange related experience at the end.

When I was 21 years old, I met a woman. She was a bisexual woman who mostly dated men.

It was September.

And it was love at first sight.

She was laughing when I first saw her across the room. The gentle fluorescent light, playing up the highlights in her hair. I was instantly drawn in by her physical beauty. It caught me off guard. I see beautiful women everywhere and am distracted and moved. But this one was especially beautiful. She was breathtaking. I couldn’t peel my eyes away.

And her playfulness added to it. She was laughing and joking when I first encountered her. The way she threw her head back and laughed deeply, hysterically at something simple someone said, I was spellbound. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. It was like the rest of the world fell away and there was only her. And she was all I wanted, all I needed.

Even as I write this now, I feel a stirring of sorts in my chest as I remember that feeling and how it was just the beginning of what would become a tumultuous years long journey of passionate love, longing, ecstasy, and agony.

I found myself moving to get closer to her. To breathe her air, to bask in her ways, to better hear her voice. I made my way over without being noticed. I found myself staring, smiling ear to ear. I remember thinking somewhere deep within that this one was made to be mine.

I just felt she was going to have some significance in my world. And she did. She wrecked my world completely. Brought me to ruin. I thought I would never recover, never claw myself out of the debris of my crumbled life and self.

She was a small, white woman, with messy, wavy brown hair that fell, softly, to her shoulders. Brown/green eyes. Maybe hazel, if I remember correctly. I can’t believe I don’t really remember. But I remember they were warm and loving.

I could tell she was quite a bit older than me, around forty years old, so almost twenty years. The age difference did not faze me.

She wore glasses and looked adorable. She came off as humble and welcoming. Her clothes were what some may call β€œfrumpy,” loose, sweat kind of clothes. I found it pleasing. Later I found that she also dressed up a lot, in girly, dressy clothes. But she had no problem dressing down in public, sometimes even when she would attend conferences and give speeches in front of lots of people, she would dress in sweat clothes. She would laugh about it and say how terrible she looked (she totally did not!). I found her even more beautiful dressed down with no makeup, hair messy. (I sound like a man, and it’s kind of cringe 🀣)

There was something sophisticated about her. She had an air about her. I already got the feeling she was intellectual, intelligent, before I knew anything about her. The way she carried herself, the backpack around her shoulder, the book in her arms. She seemed deep and aware. I was correct.

I later found out she was a teacher/college instructor, and writer and editor for some blogs and local news articles. She did workshops on writing and stuff like that. She had genius level intelligence. There was no hint of arrogance whatsoever. She was very successful with education and career. She did not have much money or health insurance though and felt this was an indication of being a failure in life.

I could tell she had a sense of humor because of her frequent, wholehearted laugh while interacting with people. This was something I fell in love with right away. A woman who can laugh, and deeply, with abandon. She was very social. Extroverted. She touched people frequently, pats on the back, hand on their arms. Reaching out to pull someone aside if she wanted to talk to them. She laughed at everything they said, joked, playful insults back and forth with the people she was with, funny sarcasm. She was witty and could take a joke. She loved risque jokes and inappropriate stuff, like I do, and wasn’t easily offended. She could be a perv like me. LoL She was very girly, but also “one of the guys.”

This, along with her physical attractiveness, made her irresistible to me. She had a soft smile on her face when I first saw her. She wasn’t looking at me and did not even know I was there. I felt something instantly for her. I wanted to make her mine. I knew I had to know more. She looks like Tina Fey (& frequently told that) and with a similar personality.

One day, I found her singing. Her voice was soft, soothing, gentle, like the voice of an angel, caressing all the depths of my being. Hauntingly beautiful. I could tell her singing was inspired by a place of deep pain. Not temporary pain. I could tell she knew a life of persistent or recurring pain. I don’t remember the words. The words weren’t important. It was the soft melancholy ache in her voice, in the passion of her song. It was as if there was a wellspring of sorrow within her, driving that kind of singing. It resonated with the ache in me. I had no idea she could sing like that.

I thought she was perfect.

And this made me love her.

I got to know her more and more and realized she wasn’t perfect.

And this made me love her so much more.

She was perfect to me.

Perfect for me.

She’s the one I wanted by my side for the rest of this life.

Arrogantly, I thought I was perfect for her too and that she would agree. This is where I went so so wrong and suffered immense heartbreak. For years I thought she broke it, but it was all my own doing, letting myself be so dependent on the expectation that I would be someone to her when in reality she wanted nothing at all to do with me. And the not knowing why and the wondering nearly k!lled me.

I remember that feeling. The feeling that I found her. It stirs something in me now. It’s not her anymore who gives me that feeling, just the memory making emotions resurface, and the fact that it can happen again as I have the ability to experience this. A kind of nostalgic and anticipatory thrill. And I like it.

She was everything I thought she was and more. Compassionate. Intellectual. Deep. Hilarious (like incredibly hilarious, I imagined us laughing for hours together). Just as beautiful on the inside as the outside. Political. Progressive. Educated. Determined. Strong. All this and more. She was generally respectful while engaging with people who were difficult or ignorant, but she could be snarky and snippy.

I found myself on occasion, wondering how this incredible woman wasn’t already mine. How on Earth I’m just finding her now. It felt that we have and should have already known each other for years (I told her that once online, and she liked my comment). I’m not a believer in an afterlife of any sort but truly, I felt I have loved and known her in life after life. That we were bound together, made for each other by the heavens above, some cosmic force or magic holding us together.

I thought of her frequently when she wasn’t around. She was always on my mind. Whenever our paths crossed, I was overjoyed and ecstatic. My whole body would become energized. I would get giddy for the rest of the day and not know what to do with myself. I loved her and wanted her to be mine. I wanted her by my side all life long. I would daydream & fantasize. I did not tell anyone about my secret love. Not family or close friends.

I loved the secret longing. It gave me a thrill, particularly because there was always that possibility we would eventually belong to each other. After the rejection, years later, that thrill was mostly gone, the thrill she may someday be mine and was replaced by deep pain, sometimes life draining pain, but the thrill of loving her and knowing someone so beautiful exists, remained.

I would see her, randomly, and make it a point to walk by her, hoping she would notice and think I’m pretty or interesting. But she never did. If I would see her walking a certain direction, I would walk that way, hoping to run into her. If I saw her having lunch with people, I would sit close by, hoping she would notice, and also just to be in her presence.

But she did not really know I existed(literally she did but it felt like she did not). When I met her face to face, she did not seem as smitten with me as I was with her. She seemed to like me, just not actively interested in being my friend, it seemed. She was polite and friendly with me, but nothing more. I was very shy and did not know how to initiate anything and was too shy to often begin conversations with her.

Once in a while I got up the nerve to try but did not know how to really express how interested in her I was, did not know how to form a friendship. All my friends were people who showed interest in me first and introduced me to their friends and then we became friends. This woman did not show interest in being more than an acquaintance, if even that.

Sometimes she would see me and come to say hello and ask how I am. She would sometimes tell me what kind of day she was having or plans for her Saturday night (which was often staying at home reading a book/watching a movie and drinking wine). I would ask her questions about herself or her day/weekend, and she would respond and ask me a couple things, and that would be it. It never went anywhere, and I did not know how to direct it somewhere.

I also had inclination for calling her and thinking of her as Baby, sweetheart, honey, love, darling, babe…as terms of endearment or affection, something I only rarely experience and when I do only for women. I did call her that occasionally while commenting on her pictures and stuff. So did others.

Just seeing her sent some joy and ecstasy through me, like electricity. I became full of excessive energy and very talkative with my friends, laughing hysterically at everything everyone said. My smile hurt my face. It was like getting a β€œfix” for the day. I was bouncing off the walls all day and night. I was all giddy, my heart racing. I felt like running through the city frolicking about, laughing and singing.

I felt the uni-verse gave me the most incredible gift there is to give, letting me catch an unexpected glimpse of her. This was long before sending her the messages. I lost sleep over her so many nights, even before the rejection because I couldn’t get her off my mind. It was a good thing. I stayed up imagining us becoming close, imagining all the great things we would do together, thinking about how beautiful she was. I used to stay up til 4:30am, dancing around my room just thinking how someone so amazing exists.

My dad used to come into my room complaining about me being up singing, dancing around at that hour. πŸ˜† He would hear me and come bursting through my door yelling β€œKIM!! What the HELL are you still doing up at this hour?!” I was bouncing off the walls. 😭 The energy she stirred in me wouldn’t let me rest. I seriously needed no sleep. It kept me going all day and night. I was never tired.

Eventually, we did not cross paths in person anymore. There was no defining moment when I realized I wouldn’t see her again, so it wasn’t as gutwrenching as it would have been. Circumstances just changed. But I carried my love for her for years. It never ended. I held onto the hope that we would see each other again. The hope wasn’t always active. I wasn’t constantly thinking about it. I knew she was out there somewhere, and somewhat close. This was enough for me.

My love for her would take the back burner once in a while, then reappear strong. Sometimes I would find a new woman to be all ga ga over. Not seeing this woman for a while, my love kind of mellowed out, but I carried it with me, hoping to run into her again. Once in a while it would become more active again. I would still daydream about her, sometimes fall asleep thinking of her even years later. There would be β€œflares” of thinking of her and longing for her then they would fade a bit.

My love stayed calm and hopeful off and on until one day I happened to accidentally come across her on Twitter. I had an online friend who had a Twitter account and I was looking at his and saw he re-tweeted something of hers. Imagine my surprise! To see her beautiful face again years later. She was around 45 years old, and I was 27 years. It was four years since last seeing her in person or having any contact with her. My heart nearly leapt out of my chest! I did not have a Twitter account but could see hers. I loved everything she posted. She was very politically Liberal, she called out racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny.

She did this even way before it was the cool mainstream thing to do. She shared all her opinions. This inspired me to look her up on Facebook and Google. It wasn’t in a creepy way. I looked her up on Facebook because we did kind of know each other to a point. If we did not ever know each other, I wouldn’t have. She was popular online and had years worth of writings and stuff, and I found so much of it. Her Facebook account was public, and she had many strangers as friends so I felt it wasn’t too creepy to request her as an online friend. She accepted.

I saw that she had a YouTube channel, blog, and Instagram account where she shared every aspect of her life and every thought that crossed her mind, even things most would not make public, like cheating on her husband with a married man, both of their marriages ruined, having an abortion without telling her husband (not saying she should have had to, but this is something most people wouldn’t broadcast to the world lol), she admitted to once dating and then moving in with a man just to use him for his money and place to live and things, when she wasn’t really in love with or interested in him for him, getting into arguments with people, the falling out she had with various friends and family members…She was a pill addict at one point and mentally unstable. Sometimes she wanted to k.ill people and would throw fits in public. She was in & out of psychiatric hospitals.

She was extremely passionate about openly supporting minority groups of any kind. She visited other cultures and learned their customs and languages. She denounced public figures/celebrities/popular people who expressed prejudicial attitudes against minority groups. She volunteered and donated money to organizations supporting minority groups.

She got a lot of criticism, even threats, but this did not stop her. She traveled and gave public speeches on LGBTQIA+ and racial minority issues. She wrote blog posts and newspaper articles on the issues. She did all this while battling debilitating mental illness and devastating headaches. I was in awe.

All this deepened my awe of her. Every terrible thing she did and shared and every great thing about her all clashed into a beautiful disarray of seasons and colors and everything. She was a beautiful disaster. My goodness was she beautiful in every way, the embodiment of beauty itself.

I wondered if her husband was out of his mind letting her go. I would have kept her and taken her back again and again.

We both held the rare philosophy that romantic love is not better than platonic love and friendship and that platonic love is equally fulfilling and important. And we both did not want to get married (she said once was enough for her, but she still wanted love).I thought there couldn’t be a more amazing person.

It wasn’t that I loved her β€œanyway.” That could have been true also. But I loved her even more, *because*. I don’t particularly have a thing for users, cheaters, homewreckers, liars, slobs (her apartment had roaches because it wasn’t clean lol), troublemakers, … it’s just because it was HER.

I also found out we loved the same kinds of stuff, books, music, cafes, movie theatres, shopping…

This is when I fell so madly in love. If I thought it was love before, this was on a whole other plane.

One day she shared that she found a dead mouse outside and she sat down and cried next to it, then buried it. She posted a picture of the mini memorial/grave she made for it. It was heartwarming, and I longed to hug her. This deepened my conviction that we were soulmates. I rarely to never meet people who care when a rodent or insect dies like I do. She would even feed roaches outside if she saw them and so do I. Lol Giving them bread or pretzels and some water. I have never known someone so compassionate except the Buddhists I used to hang out with Her and me are atheists.

I felt we were soulmates. I wanted a relationship with her that is more interconnected or close than close best friends usually are. But I would have been absolutely thrilled to have her in any context, even if she was a casual acquaintance or work friend. Most of my pain was not having any contact with her. I just wanted her in my world in some way. I was so super jealous of her friends and acquaintances because I did not have her in any way except a few social media comments/likes here and there. It was so tantalizing.

I wanted nothing but her. I wanted her to be mine and to take care of her forever.I felt like any problem I ever had would disappear if she was mine. So I sent her a long message, two actually, (don’t know how I got up the nerve but I did and wholeheartedly regretted it lol It was and still is uncharacteristic of me to be so bold) gushing about how we could be amazing friends and live close enough to hang out and do everything together since we like all the same stuff and she unfriended my account, after not responding for a few days. lol (definitely was NOT laughing back then)

I saw people who were strangers to her but lived close enough, commenting on her posts asking to get coffee or ice cream with her and her agreeing. She was very social and a bit popular because of all her activism work and volunteering and she had a large social media and blog following, mostly by people in our city. So my message to her was not completely out of the ordinary for her who did get lots of requests to meet up and hang out and she was always getting compliments on her physical beauty and personality. I had lots of competition; everyone loved her. She also got a lot of negative comments by a-holes who did not like her political views or just wanted to troll. This would infuriate me and I wanted to tell them all off. LoL I was very protective and defensive of her. I could not stand her getting negative comments. To me, she was perfection.

Back then, her rejection was the worst thing ever, and triggered a two month long major depressive episode thankfully not a s*icidal one but still debilitating – I was able to keep the s*icidal thoughts under control and I had close friends, which helped, even though they did not know what was going on, exactly, but I had difficulty getting out of bed each morning and getting to work, my body was so heavy and most of my joy in life was gone, s*icidal thoughts tried to emerge but I was able to keep them away, I saw no hope for any future for me, no food had flavor, I couldn’t sleep, no motivation to do anything – all I thought about was her and why she did not want me, was I not good enough…

My whole self felt so broken; it felt like I wasn’t whole, like I would never be because of this experience. I felt the rejection of someone and something I desperately wanted, but also, I felt a deep deep sense of loss. She was never mine to lose, but still I felt deep, profound loss. There was always that possibility. Beautiful potential. At least in my mind. But it was snatched away because of my decision to reach out and make myself and my love known. Oh. How I regretted it so. For years. How I regretted it. I regretted everything I said. Every word of it.

I remember this was one of the things that made it especially difficult to move on. I felt that I was irreparably broken, that I was now tarnished and would never be able to love anyone ever again. It felt like something significant, something inherent to me being me, was cut off permanently. I felt that I became a lesser version of me, a hollow version, a shadow or shell of what I was before I reached out to her. She was so much an essential part of me (with my perspective) or my love for her was, that it seemed impossible to have a full life loving her when she did not love me at all. It was like what good is life when the most important thing to me isn’t in mine. It’s a bit deeper than I know how to put into words.

I feel it’s coming off more superficial than it was. It wasn’t simply a matter of I can’t have her what good is life, that too. It was more that my love for her felt so fundamental to my core or identity that I felt somehow altered at a cellular level, almost like I wasn’t the full me anymore that I was. Like an identity crisis. It felt like this part of me , loving someone to this extent, this depth, this magnitude, who does not love me even just a little bit, is making me less the girl I was.

It physically sickened me to the point my headache disorder flared up unbearably for weeks and it felt like life was crumbling on top of me. The headaches were devastating, even more devastating than the emotional pain, in a way. I find physical pain of this magnitude to be even more difficult to cope with than emotional pain. It felt like my face being burned alive on one side. I have been depressed before over losses, exclusion, but this was different.

To get to see so much of her life (she was very open about every single aspect of her life, social, emotional, dating, romantic, sexual, marriage, interests, politics, religion, family, health/medical…She was raw, open, honest…and this is one of the things I loved most about her, how she shared herself with the world. I find being β€œan open book,” a very attractive quality in people) displayed on my screen and not getting to be a part of it in any way, was pain like I can’t explain.

She was my everything and more, and to not be good enough for her was a pain that is indescribable. Everyday, the pain ripped through me emotionally and physically. It felt like my life was over. I couldn’t see a future without her now that I found her. I truly felt that way for a while, that without her, life had nothing to offer me. But at the same second, the joy it brought me just to cross paths with her and know someone that beautiful exists, was out of this world. I was so amazed by the sharp contrast of joy and pain she brought me. They existed alongside one another, never touching or tainting each other. They never mixed or outweighed each other. They both had a place within. If it wasn’t for the overwhelming gratitude for just having crossed paths with her in this life and the knowledge of how wonderful she was, the pain would have been so much more difficult to bear. But the pain did not touch the gratitude, making it so I had that to lean on to carry me through it.

While the pain and joy were both equal, in fact, the joy was even deeper, I had to eventually give into the pain and let her go around three years later – the depression lifted after two months but the heartbreak continued – I stayed in love with her for the next couple years, after I stopped looking at all her content. I stalked it for a few years, then stopped, still actively loved her for a couple more years even after cutting off all contact with her content, til it eventually faded. It mellowed and gradually faded til it flickered out completely and thoughts of her were no longer painful or joyful. For a while I was still embarrassed and hoped she deleted the messages. LoL πŸ˜† Kind of still low-key embarrassed.

Another thing that helped me get over her is leaning into the selfless aspect of my love for her. There was a part of that love that wasn’t for me. A part that wanted nothing but for her to be happy, healthy, fulfilled. A part that did not yearn or attach or expect. I seized that small but powerful aspect and leaned into it, nourished it, clung to it, until it grew, strengthened, deepened, magnified, and became enough.

That aspect of my love reminded me what an honor it was to get to feel this love for someone, it let me know my love wasn’t in vain, that it still mattered, still counted for something. It showed me the beauty in loving at a distance, of carrying a love so strong for someone I will never lay eyes on, someone I will never embrace, someone I will never have. It showed me a deep deep selflessness and let me live it each day. It reminded me that it’s a reflection of me, but it’s not about me. I was able to let go of so much of the selfish aspect of love, the part that makes us covet.

The part that expects and demands and is often conditional. I leaned so deeply into the selfless aspect until I submerged, til it eased some of the ache, the burn of rejection, until it made that selfish agonized part softer and softer, until it made me strong enough to endure without crumbling, and then that state gave way to the indifference, the indifference that eventually ensued after all the heartache and ruin, the indifference that set me free and gave me my life back.

In fact, the kind of person she was is one of the things that inspired me to cope and eventually heal. She was the kind of person who saw beauty in pain and brokenness, art in imperfection, she saw love & life & light in dark places, and a chance for healing in deep wounds. I harnessed that energy. And I put it to use in myself. I saw beauty in my pain and the brokenness of unrequited love. I saw my life of loving her as a beautiful novel, like the novels she read full of dark and despair, full of heartache, but also so much love and beauty. I saw love & life & light in my darkness, and I saw my wound, my deep deep gaping wound, as an opportunity to nourish and heal a part of myself that was so shattered. And I leaned into this.

The person I allowed to break me because I depended so much on and expected so much of her is the very person I leaned on to inspire me to heal that brokenness. Loving her so deeply for so long, she became my way of life, and that way helped me move forward out of the devastation that came upon my world. She was my darkness & my light, my joy and my pain, my despair & my hope, she’s the one I clung to so desperately for so long and the one who taught me how to let go. The one who brought me to ruin and my savior who pulled me out of that ruin. There was a beautiful irony in all of this that wasn’t lost on me. It’s a true story that she would have read and found so beautiful.

To keep dwelling on her and stalking her (lol) was keeping me in agony and doing me no good. The pain had more of a destructive effect overall than the joy had a positive effect. The pain was about not having her as my own but also the fact of being rejected and not understanding why. I know everyone doesn’t like everyone, especially not in a deep way, but she did not even want me as an online friend anymore.

It was hard to cope and understand. I had very good self esteem, always have, and this rejection was a blow to it. The fact that she responded to everyone else, even strangers, and loved everyone, but rejected me, made it so much more difficult to cope. One of my messages to her was about my s*icidal depression, something she talked about very frequently, about herself. She was very very open about her struggle.

I told her about my own struggle, which is very similar to hers. I’m open about it in general but told her more than I ever told anyone because I felt this deep connection to her in our similar struggle. I told her that I too sometimes come close to ending myself. It cut me so deeply because shortly after I sent her the message about my depression and sometimes s*icidal thoughts(I sent this a while after the love letter), she posted, β€œTo anyone considering s*icide, please remember this world needs you.”

And she posted the s*icide hotline. To see her care about everyone else and not me was devastating. I felt like it was a slap in the face. Not that I was entitled to her love or a response but that did not make my pain any less to see my own pain ignored and me rejected but that she cared about other s*icidal people. It’s hard to explain without sounding entitled. I in no way felt that she owed me anything(I even remember feeling guilty for my pain and sense of rejection, telling myself she doesn’t owe me a thing, that I’m the one who found and came at her), but it did not make me want it any less. I wasn’t angry or bitter but devastated.

I felt that I wasn’t good enough for anyone after the rejection and took a while to recover. I couldn’t cope knowing β€œthe most amazing person who ever walked the face of the Earth” did not love me. lol It was a matter of β€œIf I can’t have her, I don’t want anyone.” It was like we were made for each other and if I can’t have her what’s the sense of having anyone? It was one of the deepest, most intimate loves I have ever known and I was sure I would never feel it again. I thought I would never get over it. I couldn’t understand why she did not feel the same.

She was so out of my league in every way, but I know that’s not why she rejected me. She wasn’t arrogant and dated/was friends with people of lower status.

Everything was so perfect and compatible, even our location was close(this is one of the main reasons for my pain, it was so tantalizing to have her so close in location but not have her, it would have been perfect). She loved women, so not like she was creeped out that another woman was in love with her. Also, she, like me, was very social and added strangers to her account.

And she was promiscuous, hooked up with lots of women and men she hardly knew and did not know at all, and was very open about it, even going into detail about her usual hookups, how she cheated on her now ex husband with a married man and it ruining both of their marriages, and drunken hookups and abortions and stuff, so I don’t think she cared that someone she hardly knew messaged her, probably all my sap creeped her out(it was a long love letter of nothing but praise and how I understand her completely and how we would be so good together forever – I’m laughing now lol I probably sounded desperate and clingy).

Her rejection did not weaken my love for her at all. It made no sense to me how, why we both existed in this same life together, so so alike, so compatible, my love for her so strong, yet we couldn’t have each other or have any interaction at all with each other.

I felt like the uni-verse made us for each other. And I couldn’t make sense of the fact that she did not like me even just a little bit. It made no sense. On top of my amazing self esteem thinking I was the shiz just in general and that anyone could like me (oh how this has changed), the fact we were both so similar, and that she basically loved everyone, I thought she was bound to like me. So I was totally confused and shocked to be rejected even as an online acquaintance. The devastation was debilitating.

We were similar in even ways that can’t be explained, like quirks that you think only you experience, or just little things that you think make you you and no one else can be like that. I was amazed! I never send friend requests, but I did send her one, and she accepted. She was more active on Insta, which I did not have, and her blog, and YouTube channel. She never liked or commented on any of my posts or pictures on social media. But she did occasionally respond to my comments to her or like them. We did not really interact much as friends, though.

Just out of nowhere, for some reason, I chose to be bold and tell her that I loved her. Have no idea what possessed me. LoL I remember my heart was pounding in anticipation as I was sending it and expecting a response that she would love to meet me again.

I remember waking up one morning and on the spur of the moment thinking β€œI think I’ll tell her I love her today.” I jumped out of bed, literally. LoL I sprung up and jumped with joy at the thought of connecting with her. I worked all day on the messages and poured my heart and soul into them. It took me days to get everything written out and edited and then finally I sent two messages and waited.

For days I waited and she wouldn’t respond. I would see her keep posting on social media and not responding to me. Actually what I remember is, she was very active on social media/blog/YouTube… posted every single day, all throughout the day. And after I sent her the messages, she stopped posting everywhere for a few days. That was extremely unusual for her. Then she came back and began posting everyday again but not responding to me.

Then finally she unfriended my account. Imagine the initial sting of clicking on her account and seeing β€œAdd friend” and then the deep deep pain of all that entailed and implied, of everything it meant. I hoped so much she would change her mind and held out hope til I finally had to accept she wasn’t going to respond and did not love me. The first thing I thought is that I came on too strongly.

I only did because she was that kind of person, herself. If she was more reserved, even if I liked her, I wouldn’t have sent messages like that. She talked about how she scared men away who she was dating or into because of how much emotion and love she had. She was kind of clingy. And she talked about how she overshared about everything, way too often, with everyone, even strangers.

And I saw that in her YouTube videos, and she would stop and say β€œWait, was that too much information?” LoL It would make me laugh. She said the more we share about ourselves, even ugly and awkward things, the more people have the opportunity to know us and therefore love us. And also that it empowers others to be themselves and feel less alone. I wholeheartedly agreed. I wrote to her one day that there is no such thing as too much information or too much love.

Maybe she just couldn’t handle being the recipient, herself. It absolutely k!lled me wondering why others were good enough for her but not me. She had many lovers and friends and acquaintances and even strangers who she expressed love for through the years. She was a hopeless romantic and was sad to be single but she couldn’t get a relationship to work. I would have been overjoyed even to be a casual acquaintance and have even a fraction of her love.

Suddenly, a man showed up in all her pictures and blog posts and videos, constantly talking about how amazing he is. She said he wasn’t a boyfriend, but a very close platonic friend, and they were always holding hands and kissing on the cheek, and going to weddings and restaurants together. He was always calling her his girl and Babe and posting pics of her on his own account(I stalked his account, bitter at him for stealing my woman and the nerve to call her Babe πŸ˜† I thought of her as my babe and my sweetheart, my girl) and she called him β€œmy guy” and β€œmy man” and posted pics of him on her account. It destroyed me because it was like the relationship I wanted with her.

But I focused more on my love for her than the pain after a while and was able to be happy she found a true friend even though I still experienced such deep pain for myself. It was hard not to be jealous of him. Like come out of nowhere and get the girl of my dreams. Like gtfoh lol

I remember them celebrating her birthday together and I was torn. In one way I was happy someone was being good to her and she was happy, but another part of me was jealous that I wasn’t included and angry at him for being to her what I wanted to be. It was so difficult. The pictures and posts they would share while out celebrating all night would bring me pain, yet also joy. And I was happy she was happy because I knew her birthdays were difficult for her because she couldn’t stand getting older.

So it was good to see him keeping her uplifted and happy. She also lost her job after a while and he was there to bring her comfort. I was happy but sorry it wasn’t me. I was concerned she would go into an episode of depression and hoped he was keeping her safe. I longed to reach out to her with some words of comfort but knew I couldn’t because she did not want me. I hoped so much he knew how to take care of her like I would.

I remember her posting a picture one day, New Year’s Eve, of her and him cuddled on her sofa together, her head resting on him. Her caption was something like β€œMy main man{and his name}, I couldn’t have done this year without you.” I had mixed emotions about it. Part of me was thankful she had someone helping her through her difficult year. But so much of me was in anguish that I wasn’t in his position. It was an inner struggle of true love being happy for her but a selfish pain that it wasn’t me making her happy and giving her love and receiving her love. I experienced both gratitude and resentment for him. I would so so much prefer her to have him than no one and even have him over me if it’s what she genuinely wanted. But I wanted her to want me.

I was so pissed when he changed his Facebook and Instagram default photos to a picture of just her.

β€œI see you driving round town with the girl I love, and I’m like fuck you.” πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

I was in so much pain every day and night. Emotionally and physically. The rejection triggered the two months long depressive episode to begin with. But through the years every once in a while I would go into another episode, usually lasting a month, about it. It would lift, and I would go back to the regular pain about it. I lived a regular happy life in general, just carried this pain with me that would flare once in a while.

Sometimes I would go a while without looking at her content or thinking of her much, then would look at her social media account, and a depressive episode/wave would be triggered. Or sometimes I would be in a low mood that I call a gateway state to depression; it’s not depression itself or even necessarily unhappiness but a tender state where I can feel if I’m not careful, I can become depressed. If I would think too much about her or check her social media accounts/blogs in this state, a depressive episode or wave could hit. This happened off and on til I was no longer interested in her.

My head throbbed relentlessly and the heartache was unbearable. I clung to anything I could for any bit of consolation. The main thing I found solace in was reading. I threw myself into books and read more than I ever read before. Mystery thrillers that kept me guessing what would happen next, intellectual readings to keep my mind active and thinking, personal development books that gave me tips for coping… anything to take my mind off her and my depression.

It was a mixture of grief and depression and it was Hell on Earth. Everything I read I would wish I could tell her about. She loved to read, too. I wanted to read books together and have hours long discussions. Every love song, I thought of her.

She had very low self esteem, body image issues, and bad luck with relationships. She dated people of any genders but especially men and had no luck. This is something that was getting to her. She said she felt lonely and left out everywhere, and I wanted to run to her rescue. I felt that I could make up for all those failed relationships of hers with all the love I had to give. I’m not this arrogant anymore.

She knocked me down a few pegs and I never quite got back up. Today, I don’t feel I have anything any woman could want or need. I don’t feel I’m loveable and think any woman can do better.

I used to be very arrogant, way back when. I thought I was all that and a bag of skittles. I remembered constantly feeling that arrogance, wearing it like a badge. I cringe now. I thought anyone who truly knew me, the real me, would love me. I thought I could heal people and make up for what they lost or have been lacking. To be this arrogant and show someone I would lay down my own life for, the deepest parts of myself, the authentic me, and being rejected was more than I could bear.

It shook my sense of self. Suddenly, I felt good enough for no one. I stopped complimenting people as much, stopped offering hugs, stopped showing up for anyone, feeling like I had nothing to offer. I’m glad she put me in my place and knocked me off of the pedestal I placed myself on because no one has any place being that full of themselves. I only wish it just humbled me, but instead, it gave me some self-esteem/worth issues.

The rejection of someone I loved with every fiber of my being and was ready and willing to love wholeheartedly, it just cuts so deeply and hits hard. She was a very emotionally unhealthy and complicated person when I think back, full of insecurities, and I longed to put them all to rest. I wanted to make her better so she wouldn’t have to suffer anymore, because I loved her and she was a good person.

She was a trainwreck, and it probably wouldn’t have been all rainbows and butterflies to get to love her, though I still would. Love isn’t supposed to be all perfection and happiness. (It shouldn’t be toxic either though, and thinking back, I have an inkling it could have been, with her, but I thought I would be able to calm her and make it so we have an easy love and life together) I loved her unconditionally.

I felt we were made to belong to each other. Like we were written in the stars. Sometimes on very rare occasions I have a feeling like there was a glitch somewhere in the uni-verse and we were made for each other but that glitch interfered. I don’t actually believe this, just a metaphor or something for a feeling I have.

Sometimes I wonder if there was some freak string of coincidental glitches in algorithms or something and she did not receive my messages and also accidentally got off my friends list. This can happen. Someone can accidentally get unfriended/unfollowed on social media. It has happened to me before. When I was sending her the e-mails, they wouldn’t go through at first. It kept saying there was an unexpected error, and I had to keep resending. But they did show up in my sent box, eventually. So they seemed to have gone through. It’s more likely she did receive them and unfriended my account. It seems too coincidental to get unfriended so close to after sending e-mails.

Sometimes when I think it could have been a mistake and she never received it because of a glitch in e-mail systems, and FB had some glitch, I experience a physiological reaction, a clenching in my gut, a dizzy sickly sensation, a fear sensation in my chest, an almost sweating sensation in the palms of my hands, to think it’s possible she could have loved me and we could have been together forever but it was prevented by a glitch. Though sometimes this thought has thrilled me, thinking there could still be a chance. Maybe I’ll run into her on the streets one day and she’ll send my heart racing and she’ll remember me and approach me first and all the stars will align and we’ll finally be together for the rest of forever. And one day I’ll tell her and we’ll laugh about it. A girl can dream.

But other occasions I was so mortified at the thought of rejection and looking clingy and overly sappy, that I preferred that she just did not see them than rejected me. For the most part now, I’m indifferent. It’s like either way, whatevz. Though it seems a bit unfortunate if she just did not see my messages. What a potentially beautiful thing possibly destroyed before it ever came to be, all because of a couple online glitches.

It was probably just all my sap was a big turn off lol πŸ˜† Or it could have been the age thing, I guess. I’m her age when we first met, and I wouldn’t give a 21 year old a second glance either lol

So much of the obsession and pain was about not getting to have any contact with her but seeing her whole life displayed across my phone screen and along with that, knowing she did not like me, even just a little bit, when I found her to be so amazing. She was so open about herself and life and constantly shared. Even if she was just a customer at my job back then who chatted with me once in a while, I would have loved it. But we weren’t in each other’s lives at all, never even talked online much.

Last year, 15+ years since seeing her in person, and just less than 10 years after last seeing her social media content or hearing anything about her, I decided to look up her Instagram account. Writing that story about her just rekindled some interest. I know a lot can change in a decade. But I knew her so well all those years ago, that I knew her account would still be public. We both have always said we would never have our accounts not public.

My hands trembled as I searched her name. My body felt like jelly. My mouth dried up. My heart raced. I was terrified of what I may find. She was so s.uicidal so frequently, I feared she may have taken her own life at some point through the years. I begged the uni-verse to not let it be so, even though I did not believe it has that power. I also feared what emotions & love may come flooding back to destroy me. Even though I haven’t seen her in years and we were never friends, the fear that she could be gone, was the same as if I was waiting to see about my close friend or family member.

Her Instagram account was still public. And she was very much alive and doing well! It made me so happy. At close to 60 years old, she is as beautiful & youthful as I remember, now rockin’ some beautiful grey hair. It was surreal to see some of the same old posts of hers I saw 10+ years ago and remembered like it was yesterday.

Memories came back but no longing. Seeing snapshots of her life and pictures of her now did not affect me. There is one post I saw, though, that felt like a hard slap in the face. A picture of her with lifelong friends and a caption that says “Some people are meant to be in your life forever.” I couldn’t help but wonder all over again why not me, what do they have that I don’t, what does she not see in me that it’s not worth being my friend, or what does see she in me that she doesn’t like yet loves everyone else. That was just a fleeting thought.

I never looked again after that once last year. No point. We’ll never be friends, she set a boundary with me when she unfriended me all those years ago. I was afraid also of accidentally liking a post of hers or Instagram start suggesting to her that we be friends lol I would die. She’s the kind of person who keeps tabs on people she ghosts or hardly knew, so she could still be looking at mine.

But recently, something strange happened that rocked my world. It affected me more than I imagined it would. And i can’t seem to shake it. There was a moment where I thought “I am not ok.” I was doing research on Philadelphia history, a topic we both love. I was looking up a particular topic and saw a news article come up. The preview was inspiring & heartwarming. It hit me in a tender place and tugged on my heartstrings. It gave me a feeling of “home.” I felt connected to whoever wrote it. I felt like we knew each other. There was a familiar knowing. Like in a “spiritual” sense. Or a soul connection way, not necessarily like we met before in the flesh.

I was going to use it in my own post, giving credit to the author. Then I noticed the source. I remembered she was once a writer for them, and this topic was something close to her heart. I felt a surge of fear. I just knew she was going to be the author. I clicked on it, and sure enough, it was a piece she wrote some years ago. She always added a deeply personal touch to even her professional pieces, pouring her heart & soul into them. It could be the most professional, cold, clinical, official topic, and she would make it human.

I read it, and remembered why I loved her all those years ago. I began to mourn all those years we weren’t friends. I have buried them deep within, but still, their ghosts haunt me. All that wondering why came flooding back. We were so intellectually & emotionally aligned and compatible. It ripped open old wounds to see that article and the author’s name. I felt a dam deep within, threatening to break, unleashing all that old love and pain. And I felt the lack of that kind of connection with another woman in my own life today. I miss her. I miss loving her when there was still potential to be loved back.

Finding her again, out in the wild, sort of, was bittersweet. She’ll always be one of my soulmates, and a place in my heart will always be reserved just for her ❀️

He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother πŸ’š

My kidney recipient & me!Β

I met Greg when he was on dialysis. Now he’s healthy enough to do everything! In 2023, my mom told me about a Philadelphia man, who was a stranger to me, in urgent need of a new kidney. He wasn’t close enough to the top of the wait list. I looked him up on Facebook & offered him my kidney. It was the easiest decision in the world for me to make. There was no hesitation. I always wanted to regift one of my kidneys to a stranger because I have always had the gift of perfect health & wanted someone else to have that, too. I was already planning on giving one of myΒ  kidneys to “the next person on the wait list.”Β

Greg & me turned out to be not only a perfect match but only living fifteen minutes apart! It turned out that Greg was not cleared for transplant. My clearance for donation was running out. Eventually, I would have had to do the six month long medical/psych evaluation all over again with no guarantee that I would be accepted again. They’re very strict.Β

So, on 1/16/2024, I did what I always planned and donated my kidney to the next person who could use it, which happened to be a 50 something year old man in Minnesota who I never met & have no contact with. Since I did this through the National Kidney Registry, I was given a kidney voucher to give to anyone in the country. I gave it to Greg, and a year after my kidney donation, Greg received his new kidney through my donation to someone else.Β

Two lives saved through my one donation! Now I have two kidney brothers. Maybe I’ll meet the other one someday. In May, Greg & me had the honor of being invited to Penn Transplant Institute’s first living organ donor celebration! I am Penn’s first living donor to sign their Donate Life flag that will be hung up at the transplant center!!

πŸ–€

Greg always wanted to do the 3k walk for organ donation, & this year was the first he was healthy enough with his new kidney. We did the walk together!

I’m just as healthy & energetic as I was with two kidneys. The joy of my experience never fades.

My body “lost” a kidney, but I gained a lifelong friend.

What a joy, what a life!

Our story is one for the books!

Donating my kidney is the best thing I ever did. I always say I wish I had 100 more kidneys to give to 100 more people. πŸ’™πŸ«˜πŸ’š

Sometimes people are beautiful β„️

β€œSometimes people are beautiful.
Not in looks.
Not in what they say.
Just in what they are.” ❄️

In January 2024 when I was in Penn hospital after my kidney donor surgery I had a very special visitor. A stranger. She was like an angel.

I was laying in my hospital bed so sick and couldn’t even sit up. I had a catheter and IV’s in. My body was exhausted and super sick feeling.

A woman walked into my hospital room and introduced herself as a retired nurse named Donna. She was grandmotherly and had the most loving presence. She was going around to the hospital rooms to cheer up the patients and give us gifts. Coloring books and colored pencils and magazines and crossword puzzles, and journals and stress balls. And just various things to distract & uplift us.

I lovingly think of her as Nurse Donna.

The moment she stepped into my room and said hello my exhaustion & severe headache, that even IV pain meds/anti nausea meds wouldn’t touch, disappeared. I instantly sat up because of the surprise of how my body suddenly felt completely healed. She asked me if I minded her company. I said no. I was so thankful for it. I told her how her just being there seemed to heal me and that her presence & energy was just so warm & healing. She said she felt the same about me. I was surprised. It sounded so sincere. I wasn’t even telling her to flatter her or be kind or get a compliment in return. I was truly surprised and baffled.

No one else, even people I liked and the most uplifting people, made my body feel completely normal. I couldn’t even sit up when anyone else came into the room. I was so sick I had to stay an extra day in the hospital and have an extra IV because I couldn’t get up or drink anything.

Nurse Donna gave me various gifts. Then she held up something else. This bookmark in the picture here. She told me her young granddaughter, Turner, made it and told her to give it to someone special at the hospital, whatever patient she thought should have it most. The holidays were over so Nurse Donna wasn’t sure anyone would want it. She was hoping someone would because her granddaughter was so happy to have made it for “someone special.” She asked me if I would like to have it. She said she had a feeling I would.

I LOVE the holiday season & Winter. All year I wait for it to return. I told her that and that I would love to have her granddaughter’s bookmark. She was so moved and said she found the right person and was thrilled to tell her granddaughter later how much I love it. She told me some things about her family. It was so uplifting. I hope her granddaughter never outgrows making her beautiful gifts.

After she walked out of the room I experienced a sad feeling and sense of loss. I loved her presence and energy and felt like our conversation ended too soon. I felt there was more to know about each other. But she did not work there, she was only a visitor. So I knew I would likely never see her again. I just had this overwhelming feeling that I was “meant to” share more with her.

Not long later she returned to my hospital room. She apologized for the “intrusion.” She had the same feeling I did and felt the need to come back and express it to me before I even told her I had the same feeling. She said she felt like there was more to know about me. She told me she doesn’t usually ask too much about the patients, that she just gives them gifts, says a few kind words, and leaves. But me, she said she felt like I was “special.” I was so pleasantly surprised at the coincidence. She said something drew her back to my hospital room.

She told me she knew I was a transplant patient. That’s all the hospital staff was allowed to tell her. She asked if I would mind telling her my story but that she would understand if not. I was delighted. She is the very first person I had the honor of telling my experience to after my surgery.

I told her I just donated my kidney earlier that morning to the next person on the wait list here in the U.S. Just thinking about that gives me chills. It was the most amazing thing to get to say that out loud for the first time after almost twenty years of it being my dream. It was (still is) surreal.

Instantly her eyes filled with tears, and she just stared at me as if awestruck. She said it was the most amazing thing she ever heard and that she never met someone who has ever done something like that and that she couldn’t wait to tell the ladies in her group and her grandchildren. I remember her saying “You have no idea who has your kidney, and I bet you don’t even care, do you?” I said no.

She said she was so honored to be standing in my hospital room. Her grandson could have needed an organ transplant but thankfully it was prevented. She said she knew he would be so moved that she met a living organ donor.

She told me she hopes I live a long happy healthy life and have everything I ever dreamed of. That was so kind of her.

I just pulled this out to look at for the holiday season. I will hold onto it forever. It holds so much meaning and was made with love by a little girl who knew someone out there somewhere needed it. She signed her name on the back. How honored am I that of all the people in the city/hospital I’m the one to have received it. I wish so much I could find Nurse Donna and tell her I still have it & love it so she can tell her granddaughter.

Maybe one day I will. πŸŽ„

After that encounter I never came across Nurse Donna again. But she’s one person I’ll vividly remember for as long as I live. I have a feeling we may cross paths again someday. I know she’ll remember me because it’s hard to forget an altruistic kidney donor πŸ˜† The chances of meeting one are negligible, on a podcast episode I heard that we’re “statistically no one.” We’re less common than people who can wiggle both ears lol And I’ll know & recognize that loving energy & warm smile anywhere.

I love Nurse Donna the same as if we were friends. It doesn’t matter that I only knew her for less than a half hour and never saw her again, it feels like I know her whenever I think of her. Some people are that remarkable.

It’s amazing how one person can impact someone for life in just a few moments of knowing each other. And not because of anything they do or say but because of the pure love they radiate. πŸ’š

Anyone who wants is welcome to share your own experience with a brief encounter with a kind stranger who touched your life for the better. I love stories like that.

(If anyone knows {retired} Nurse Donna who volunteers with Headstrong cancer foundation and gives sweet gifts to the patients at HUP, or her granddaughter, Turner, please direct her to this post. Thank you in advance lol)

Sending love to all πŸ’š

“When I first learned about her, no less than two million buffalo stampeded across my chest. (That is just an estimate at the risk of sounding dramatic.) When the dust finally settled, when chaos clipped its own wing & the Earth relinquished her thunder, I found the remains of a heart not twenty feet from my aching body, trampled into a bloody mess. This heart did not belong to me, but I ripped open my own ribcage just to double-check.”

Years ago, I had a close friend of almost ten years. We worked together and saw each other almost everyday. She was a big part of my world. I frequently talked about her when she wasn’t around, recounting all the hilarious things she said or the kind things she did for me or others. I found that she talked about me when I wasn’t around also. And she always had something she couldn’t wait to tell me, usually about one of her grandkids. I never imagined we could ever be apart. Life without her was unfathomable. It made no sense.

Then one day she just dropped dead.

At work.

A heart attack they said.

It was quick. Probably painless. For her. She was already gone when her body hit the floor. I was not there that day. I was on a meditation retreat. When I returned to work I saw her folded up newspaper and her half full bottle of water on her table. The water she was drinking and the paper she was reading just moments before her death took place. They never took it away.

I thought I would never recover. It was the absolute most traumatic experience of this entire life of mine. It wrecked me completely. I could not sleep and felt I would collapse in grief & trauma everyday wherever I was. I would wake up in a panic in the middle of the night. My body was constantly in the “fight or flight” mode. I forgot what it felt like to not be afraid. Her death devastated my world. Nothing else I ever experienced in this life came close to that trauma.

I constantly felt the urge to scream hysterically or scream her name until my throat was raw & tasted of blood. I imagined myself frantically climbing up the tallest skyscrapers in the city, like a wild animal, with just my arms and legs, and screaming her name off the rooftops, not to summon her, but to expel the violent primal pain ripping through my body with every breath I took. I used to cover my face with my pillow in the dead of night to mask the screams. It was not crying or sobbing. It was screams. Primitive screams. Fear, pain ripping through me, trying to claw its way out of my body and escape into the night. Sometimes I would lay on a floor in a fetal position, holding myself, my entire existence throbbing hysterically. When I was able to finally drag myself up, I would look in a mirror and my eyes would be completely black. My face distorted by terror. It was a shock to see. I felt like the embodiment of Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.”

I had no idea how to handle the fear of the thought of her being gone forever. I felt like I would go to the ends of the Earth to find her. It was the same sense of panic as a phobia. (I have, now dormant after exposure therapy, lifelong Claustrophobia, so I know).  The panic of knowing she was gone forever, never able to return, the permeance of her absence, the permeance of death in general, death itself, threatened to drive me insane. Just very faintly, a hint of that feeling of possibly going insane without her here lingers today, only rarely appearing and is more like a hologram or a shadow than anything of substance. I knew people die and have even known people who died. But I had no idea someone can just die. I had no experience with it when it was someone that close to me. I suddenly realized the hard way that absolutely anyone can die and without warning. It was a rude awakening. I did not like it.

My mundane sense of safety & security was stripped away forever like being soundly asleep and having a warm comforting blanket unexpectedly ripped off of you and a bucket of ice water suddenly poured over your exposed body before you ever get the chance to process what is happening. For a while I lived in a constant state of confusion & shock.

I wanted to go back to my safe little bubble where no one close to me ever dies and couldn’t possibly die, where it was only something I heard about and knew in an abstract way, never my reality, my nightmare.

Sometimes I wondered if my own heart could handle the pain or if it too would soon give out, suddenly stop forever just like hers. There was once a couple months after her death where I truly believed I was having a heart attack too at 28 years old. I literally thought I was dying. It was something I never experienced before. I woke up in the middle of the night gasping for breath, plagued with the grief, but now accompanied by something else. My chest was caving in. It felt like I was suffocating. I couldn’t catch my breath. It felt like something crushing me. I dragged myself out of bed and looked in a mirror. My eyes were completely black. My mouth was agape in horror. Clutching my chest, I slid to the floor to die. Literally I believed the grief was physically k!lling me. It was the most terrifying thing imaginable.

Suddenly I realized it was the beginning stages of a panic attack. I never had one before. The only real anxiety I ever had before that was related to my claustrophobia but never resulted in a panic attack. I stopped it in its tracks with a meditation technique I learned. I never had one again but continued to live in a near constant state of panic for a while.

My whole world crumbled on top of me. It was like I had to learn to live again. It took years to rebuild myself.

I felt like I was drowning (when I was 11 years old I almost drowned in a swimming pool at a family member’s house, and this felt exactly the same) and like I was missing a limb. Every single day it felt like part of my body was missing, like my own flesh & blood was torn away. It felt like I had to learn to breathe again. Breathing no longer came naturally. Sometimes I was literally gasping for breath. My chest felt like it was being crushed. It truly felt like a nightmare I could not wake up out of. I did not grow up with Diane, I met her at 20 years old. I only knew her for less than ten years. We were not biologically related. But for some reason it feels and has always felt like her love has been with me all life long, for as long as I can remember, and her death feels, even to this day, almost like a biological injury, like I lost a piece of myself.

It took years for me to “get over it” as much as I ever will. She’s the closest person to me who ever died. I had friends/family who died before her, but nothing prepared me for this. My pets dying was not less painful, but I had pets who died since I was little and unfortunately expect that. I never imagined I would lose a human so close to me and so much a part of me.

She was old enough to be my mom and has sons around my age or a bit older. She showed me a love that was like a Mother’s love. She would give me loving mom hugs. She was very protective and would yell at anyone she thought was doing something wrong to me. One day my dad came to work and was messing around joking and said “What are you doing?!” And my friend was going by in a car and heard him and she yelled “She’s working!! The fuck’s it look like she’s doing,” not knowing it was my dad just playing around. He was pissed. πŸ˜‚

She used to invite me to her house for Thanksgiving & Christmas with her big family but I always had family plans and never accepted the invitations. Now I wish I did at least once. She would make me lunch and check up on me and even brag about me like I was her own daughter. All three of her sons wanted to date me at one point and would argue over me, and she told me she wanted me as a daughter in law but that I was too good for all of them. πŸ˜† She said “Wait til they all get their shit together and then choose one.” 🀣 Diane was a widow, her husband died years before and she stayed single. Her three boys and grandkids were her world. I met all of them. They would come to our work, and she would proudly show them off.

She frequently told me I was too good for this world. She also told me one of her biggest fears in life was that this cruel world would turn me cold, harden me, and that I would lose my sweetness, my soft, gentle ways. My warmth. She told me she never met anyone with my level of kindness and never knew it existed until she found me. She said I have a heart unmatched by any other and she was afraid that heart could grow cold.

I once overheard her expressing this same fear to someone else and telling them one of her only wishes in life is for me to stay kind, warm, caring, even in the face of the world’s bitterness. She made me promise her more than once that I would never lose myself to the cruelty & coldness of others. I always had to say “I promise.” Sometimes, years after her death, I have felt that happening and then I remembered my promise to her and felt myself soften.

She would often say “Love ya, girl” when we were parting ways.

“Unfuckingbelievable”

The last word I ever heard her say.

It was a cold February morning. A sardonic smile creeping at the edges of her mouth, scoffing at the situation before angrily slamming a window closed in my face. I remember it so vividly. It’s burned in my mind. She slammed the window closed without giving me a chance to say goodbye. Then she turned her back to me and walked away.

I never saw her again.

That last encounter makes me laugh because it is so her. I did not like her when we first met. I thought she was obnoxious. She asked me how much something costs. I meant to say 75 cents or two for $1 and slipped and said 50 cents or two for $1. And she said “Yeah, no shit it’s two for $1.” 🀣 I never imagined then that I could come to love her the way that I did.

It doesn’t hurt me that we never got to properly say goodbye. It’s quite fitting. We never had a proper hello either. Diane walked out on me the same way she walked in. Loud. Sarcastic. Cynical. Fiery.

It really was just so her. And I wouldn’t have her any other way.

She was loud and sarcastic and cursed constantly just in mundane conversations. If she was angry or unhappy with us we knew it. She was also very kind & giving.

She loved Rod Stewart. And strawberry ice cream. And hot chocolate. And soft pretzels. We would sit together on cold Winter nights laughing and drinking hot chocolate with whipped cream and playing Rod Stewart songs. The memories make me dizzy.

I always said if I knew her heart was going to stop beating, that last day I saw her I would have cracked open my own chest, ripped my own heart out if I could have, and handed it to her. I would have given my heart to Diane so she could meet her grandbaby and so she could have more cones of strawberry ice cream and so that she could hear one more Rod Stewart song and so that she could keep yelling at her boys for “not having their shit together” and so that she could keep giving big tips to food workers (as food workers ourselves we had no money, but she always gave her last dollar to someone else).

She already had my heart. But if I could I would have given her every beat of it I have left, to keep her here.

She was about to have a (great) grandbaby and could not wait to meet him. It was all she talked about. She died at 58 years old, just before he was born. I got to meet that baby and tell his sweet mom (her granddaughter) how much she already loved him, how he was all she talked about at work.

I have a sterling silver necklace with her name engraved on it and her birthstone (the one I’m wearing in this picture) that I bought after she died. I think of her often. It has been nearly ten years without her, but she’s always somewhere in the back of my mind, I can always feel her. While I felt the loss so deeply & so profoundly and to some extent still do, I never felt that I lost her love. It feels like it has never gone away. It’s an ingrained part of me that can never go away. It feels almost as essential to me as my DNA.

My grief for Diane is now quiet, calm. It’s as mellow as it will ever be. Such a sharp contrast to what it used to be. Even the “flare ups,” you know the ones that hit at random moments or are triggered by a memory or anniversary or certain part of the year, are quite soft now. It no longer traumatizes me or floors me or provokes the urge to scream into the night. And my eyes are no longer black with terror at the thought of her never walking this Earth again. There’s a somber acceptance now. A sad knowing that can coexist with me.

I am still sad. There is still heartbreak. But I can breathe again. My head feels like it’s above water.

Every now & again I feel a wave approaching. A wave of that grief I know so well. The grief that used to knock me to the floor or the ground, wherever I was standing. The grief that knocked the wind out of me, leaving me breathless. I brace myself for the blow as it comes at me. But when it arrives it’s soft & gentle. Briefly touching me, almost like a caress before bouncing off. It doesn’t take me under like it used to. There may be a hint of that despair riding on each wave. Sometimes there is still a sharp pang in the gut. But it never hits like it used to. It’s like an Ocean’s wave by the time it reaches the sand and only comes up to your ankles. You can still feel the piercing coldness of it and the distant or potential threat of it knowing how powerful it once was, how uproarious & v!olent. But it’s harmless. It’s just there. There may even be a touch of beauty to it.

Today I no longer think about what I lost but what I had. Her love was a gift that never had to be given to me but was.

And I am so so lucky.

Randomly, I write about Diane and share it. Ten years later she is still my inspiration for writing. I have written about her even before she died. My last post about her a while ago is something I titled “The Forgotten Mourners” and is about how the loss of a platonic friend is disenfranchised grief (and especially when it’s the loss of an online friend or a coworker).

It’s always someone else’s grief first. It belongs to the spouse or to the children or to the parents. It’s never ours. We’re always lost in the shadows of their mourning, the “real” mourners, seemingly hijacking their grief. This can make it so it feels like it’s not our place to grieve or to grieve as deeply as we are. Whenever my grief would reach its pinnacle I told myself to tone it down. What about her sons? Her grandkids? What about her siblings & “real friends?” Who am I to tread? Years ago shortly after she died and I wrote about her death, I asked everyone to withhold any sympathy/compassion directed at me, I said it wasn’t my loss, that it was her family’s loss, the loss of her “real friends,” I was just a little old work friend.

Years later I take that back. She was my friend. I was her friend. And it is a tragic loss to me, one that has left me with a deep gaping wound that took years to heal. One that still marks me today. Our grief is ours to claim. Some losses are more profound than others and someone grieving for the same person may have it worse. I’m sure losing a spouse, for example, is more devastating or extensive than losing a coworker. But that doesn’t make the grief for a work friend any less valid or any less painful than it is in its own context. There is unfortunately enough grief to go around.

My love for Diane has never faded like the worst of the grief has. My sense of missing her also hasn’t.

If I could whisper one thing into the uni-verse that could reach her it would be:

“I love you, Diane. I love you.”

“The rhythm of my heart
Is beating like a drum
With the words ‘I love you’ rolling off my tongue” ❀️

I promise.

Let’s get physical πŸ˜†

Not sure but this may need a content warning ⚠️: non sexual touching by a stranger without consent

A random stranger man came up today and hugged me without my consent. It was on a crowded city street in daylight. He looked to be early 30 something years old. A bit younger than me. I had earphones in and was looking at my phone when a man walked towards me asking me something. I wasn’t interested in whatever it was, I was on my way to work (turns out he was asking me what food I like). I sensed he was not a threat. But he wouldn’t let me walk by because he wanted my attention. Then he grabbed me by the left shoulder and swung around in back of me and pulled me close to him. My back was against him with his arms around my upper body, holding me close. It was completely non sexual/non threatening. He wasn’t trying to feel me up at all. It was just a heartfelt hug. It was more playful & silly than anything. He had a big silly grin on his face when I saw his face. I can tell he just wasn’t taught proper boundaries.

It’s hard to convey the nuances in writing or speaking. So it may sound scarier than it was. Part of me was super annoyed that he was touching me without my consent, but my body loved the sensation of being hugged & held, especially the way he hugged me so closely and tightly. It truly felt like love. It felt safe. It was the kind of hug that is usually reserved for close people, not strangers on the street. It’s not the way I hug strangers when I have a choice. I prefer that level of hugging to be for close people. Again, it was not romantic/sexual in any way. He wasn’t asking me out or trying to get my phone number or anything and no touching me other than his arms around me. But it was still wrong. I tried to pull away because it was not consensual and was just weird, and he pulled me back and held me even closer. It wasn’t in a dominant way like to show me he was in charge, and there was nothing intimidating about it. (I have experience with men like this and can tell the difference) It was more like he wanted to hug and wasn’t ready to let go.

He’s lucky I’m not a woman who would instantly pull out mase or a g u n or punch him. Especially with what has been going on these days. (Men holding up signs saying “Your body, my choice” & “Women are property” and blasting that sentiment all over social media ever since the misogynistic predator was elected as President again)

After trying to pull away and him pulling me back, my body reacted instinctively, leaning against him and letting him hold me close as if we were best friends. I put my arms around his that were around my body as he held me for a few seconds, his head leaning against mine. My mind felt guilty for enabling him to grab & hug stranger women on the streets, but physically it was satisfying & fulfilling. And I let that part override the guilt telling me I should put him in his place. It was my guilty pleasure. If he was trying to do anything other than hug me I would have done more to stop it. Or if his hugging was sexual in some way. But it wasn’t. It probably was because I’m a woman. He probably doesn’t run up and hug other men like that, but still it wasn’t pervy or anything like that. In no way does this make it ok. I’m just saying I wouldn’t have tolerated it if it was sexual.

Now layers of my touch starvation have been peeled away. Even a while later my body feels light and like it got something it needed. But this is not the way that should happen.

I really need friends lol

My touch starvation isn’t just because of lack of physical touch, it’s the lack of emotional closeness with someone. I haven’t had close in person friends in a while. If I had a close emotional connection with someone even if we never ever physically touch, my touch starvation would be less. Even a day of socializing with strangers reduces my physical touch starvation a little bit. There have even been occasions I had staff meetings at work and my whole body felt lighter after just because of being around people. I’m seriously so super extroverted, but everyone says I can’t be or can’t accurately use that label because of how shy & quiet I am lol

I don’t have a trauma history or sensory issues with touching people, so I don’t mind being touched in & of itself or being approached by men in a non threatening way. But it’s not ok to touch someone without consent. It’s not ok anyway, but imagine if a woman with trauma history is grabbed & held by a random man on the street. She would probably have a breakdown.

These boys need to be taught better growing up.

I’m literally concerned for his safety because some other woman is going to take no πŸ’© and either pull out mase or worse. And it will be πŸ’― his own fault even though he’s harmless or at least not a true threat. I can be intuitive & receptive so can usually tell if I have to be concerned about a man, but not every woman is and may mistake him for a threat or she may just see a strange man approaching & touching her and take action, or she may have a trauma history and fr3ak out and react. And all of this would be his fault, not hers in any way. And the fault of whoever brought him up lacking boundaries.

I love hugs and will hug anyone who requests it. I have participated in “National Free Hug Day” years ago and also had a “Free Hugs” t-shirt before, that I would wear out & about. Strangers on the streets would come over and request a hug (they always asked first). I lost the shirt and always want to get another one and never get around to it.

Anyway I feel guilty for physically liking it knowing it’s wrong and feel like a scuzzy gender traitor sort of for letting a strange man touch me and not speaking up for all of us even though it wasn’t sexual in any way. (I promise I’m not though lol I have definitely approached men before when I saw them harassing other women and have spoken up for myself before. I have invited women to walk with me when they were being harassed on the streets) It was good for my mental health also. Humans in general need connection & physical touch with other humans (even if just platonic like this), but it seems twisted of me liking it with how it happened. I in no way condone it or appreciate it at all. But on a physiological & some emotional level beyond my choice/control it benefits me. It’s a strange contradiction, I know. It feels perverse.

I feel like a total sleeze today lol Can’t say I’m a credit to my gender.

If he wanted a hug he should have just asked. I would have gladly said yes.

Anyway, sending a consensual hug to anyone out there who needs or wants it lol 😘

What’s your superpower? πŸ’š {Here’s mine}

Boundless, indiscriminate compassion.

I’m not always kind or pleasant and haven’t been for the last week with all the trolls and oppressors. I have been arguing & sh!tposting all week Lol I don’t believe everyone deserves kindness always.

But I never wish d3ath or suffering on anyone and in general would go to great lengths to stop it even for someone I don’t like. I have even been called an enabler and “mental” because of some of the people I would save.

I wouldn’t be friends with just anyone or let just anyone into my space. But there are very few people I wouldn’t go to great lengths to save (people who would use it for evil actions and have the power to in a large scale way) and no one I would get joy out of seeing them suffer.

This may be considered by many as not a good thing, but it actually is because even if it’s not good to help or care about “bad people,” my compassion embraces all the good and average people as well. There are way too many people who don’t care about anyone at all. I much prefer someone who cares about everyone than no one. To me just being a sentient being makes someone worthy of basic compassion. Kindness? Not necessarily. Forgiveness? Again, not necessarily. But compassion, yes. This isn’t a philosophy or argument, it’s just the way I naturally am. I have always been this way. I don’t expect everyone to agree, and most people probably don’t. I don’t think it’s necessarily better or worse, just different.

I’m also overly empathetic (empathy is different than compassion, but the two are often mistaken as the same) and cannot stand it. It’s mostly only with physical pain/suffering. When someone is suffering physically, even a terrible person or character in a fiction movie, I feel literally like I’m being t0rtured. I can’t bear it and can’t even watch those scenes. My compassion is something I have always experienced. But I think the empathy came later. I always had basic empathy just like everyone else, but the more developed empathy I have now I think came years ago after I began getting recurring devastating & debilitating headaches. It’s not a choice or train of thought or philosophy. And it’s not something I want. I can’t even watch horror movies I want to watch when there are too many graphic scenes because I feel like my own guts are being carved out. And after I turn it off it takes me a while to recover psychologically.

If I could flip a switch or give up a piece of myself to stop all the suffering in the world even for “bad people,” I wouldn’t hesitate even if it meant I had to take on some pain myself. I absolutely cannot stand illness & suffering. No matter who it is experiencing it.

Six months πŸ’šπŸ«˜

This post is a bit late. It’s something I wrote for my one month kidneyversary. It was last month.

One cold January morning in the midst of a snowstorm two anonymous strangers in two different states, one in Pennsylvania, the other in Minnesota, laid on an operating table. Taking the plunge, together, risking it all. With one dream: life. One to give life, one to receive.

Sometimes I’ll be walking along a street and out of nowhere suddenly remember that someone else is living with a piece of me inside of them. Alive and well because I gave a piece of myself away. And I feel as if I could fall at my own feet in awe.

It hits at random moments, filling me with overwhelming joy, inspiration, takes my breath away. It’s something that can’t even be put into words. Truly indescribable. So beautiful. It’s an experience that took me months to fully process. The profoundness only began to truly sink in and register as the months went on because it’s an experience like no other, extremely rare & unnatural. It’s not everyday you get to meet someone who gives part of their body away to someone else to keep that person alive. It’s not everyday you get to BE someone who does that. Unless you’re me, that is πŸ˜†

I don’t even know their name, their age, or their gender. I have never seen their face. I never heard their story and maybe never will. But we are connected through life, forever. The only two humans on Earth to have shared that same organ. Intimate strangers. Two halves of the same whole. My perfect match. I love my recipient with my whole heart. Or with my whole kidney. It’s a strange experience to be able to love someone with this intensity never having laid eyes on them. A love that has nothing to do with liking, nothing to do with personality. A no strings attached kind of love. Unconditional. An unbreakable bond.

There is no greater act of love than giving a piece of ourselves away. And I am honored to have had the opportunity to experience a love like that.

A piece of me is missing, but I have never been more whole.

I like to think that my superpower is that I’m in two places at once and can pee for two. πŸ˜†

The experience of a lifetime.

Happy Six Months to us!!

Here’s to many, many more. 🫘πŸ₯‚πŸŽˆπŸ’š

I Would Die 4 U – Prince {queer interpretation & my unrequited love story πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ} πŸ’œ

This post is edited to fix it up a bit but is essentially the same.

⚠️: not the topic, but brief mention of depression/su*cidal inclination/s*icide

This is my true story.

“Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven’t got a clue
But let me start by saying
I love you” ❀️

When I was 18-20 years old (around 18-20 years ago), I was head over heels in love with another girl, a gay girl who hardly knew of my existence. I loved her secretly and never acted on it, but it was one of the most passionate loves I have ever known. I loved her with every fiber of my being, more than life itself. It was a fierce burning love that consumed all of me. There is still a vestige of that love living somewhere in me today, permanent, like a tattoo on the very soul of me.

She was a cisgender masc woman, a stereotypical gay woman with short black hair, and warm brown eyes. Very outgoing, the kind of person everyone liked. She was genuinely interested in people. She was around 30 years old when we met. The age difference did not matter. It doesn’t matter to me how much older someone is than me.

I remember the moment we first met. It was a cold mid-December afternoon in 2004. I saw her across the crowded lobby, holding her jacket, standing with a couple of people, smiling & looking around. It was one of those moments where time stands still. The place was packed, but I only saw her. I had no idea who she was or that our lives would soon cross paths & touch ever so briefly but impact me so profoundly. I was instantly drawn to her. A feeling of excitement automatically ran through me. She was around the same size as me, a wh!te woman wearing glasses with a backpack on. She was wearing blue jeans & a long-sleeved plaid shirt with the sleeves pulled up & sandals with socks.

I don’t remember the color of her shirt, but I vividly remember the sandals with socks; I thought it was cute & not something I saw often, something conventionally considered a fashion fail, but she pulled it off adorably. She exuded self-confidence.

Her hair was short (like what is typical for a man) & messy, sticking in all directions. She had a masculine way of moving; she was clearly a woman/fem presenting person but with a degree of masculinity, even the way she would brush her fingers through her hair or rub her hand down her face, was conventionally man-like. She was what someone would call boyish or tomboy. There was something macho in her mannerisms & appearance, masculine, but not so much so that she could be mistaken for a man. Anyone could see she was just a non gender conforming woman. She had the gender identity of a woman & was assigned female at birth.

Her voice was feminine & so was her laugh. She sometimes wore men’s cologne. I loved getting a whiff of her cologne. It was beyond thrilling when she would walk by me in her masculine way with her cologne wafting around me; my heart would race because of the thrill (men don’t do that to me, only women do, lol). Even now, I can feel the thrill, just remembering. I so want that experience again with someone else, someone who loves me back.

She had tattoos on her arms & a large silver watch on her wrist that was probably intended for a man. It added to her masculinity. And the whole masc thing drove me wild. When she would move in her masc ways, it was a big “turn-on.” It thrilled me to the core, sometimes sending my heart racing & making me giddy. Extreme joy & light would fill me to the brim. No makeup, occasionally she wore a necklace & small earrings. Some days I would see her dressed professionally, in pantsuits or shirts with collars. πŸ₯΅ Sometimes she wore baseball caps. I thought she was adorable.

Her aesthetic/style/appearance was very different than mine. I had hair long enough to sit on. It would hang over chairs when I would sit down & reach the floor when I laid in bed & threw my hair over the side. I wore large silver loop earrings & always had painted nails or, once in a while, even a French manicure if I was able to get the money 😁 I wore belly shirts that showed my whole midriff & low cut blue jeans with 5-inch stiletto heels & too much eyeshadow. I was told by different people that I looked like a stripper or a wh0re or asked if I was one lol

There’s no denying there was some kind of instant attraction that wasn’t sexual in nature but was very gay. lol I wouldn’t dare admit that back then.

The day I first met her, she walked over and leaned over me to look at something in back of me. She was mumbling something half to herself & half to me. Her face was in mine but off to the side. I was leaning on my side against a wall with my back against a long table that was pushed up against the wall I was leaning on and another wall in back of me. She wanted to see a poster or something on the wall in back of me.

The table and me were blocking her. And instead of asking me to move, she just leaned over me, lightly brushing up against me with her whole body. Instantly, an uncontrollable tingling feeling began in my fingertips & surged through my whole body to the tips of my toes, almost like if you take a shot of something alcoholic. I still remember it so vividly & just the way it felt to be around her. It’s a pleasant memory and gives me hope that I can have that again one day with someone who loves me back.

Her body just barely touched mine, but it was enough for me to feel something being that close. It felt not platonic but wasn’t sexual. While it was a pleasant sensation, could have even been thrilling, I was disturbed because I thought it made me gay and that that could potentially make me a target of homophobia even if I told no one. And I absolutely would not have told anyone at all back then, even if I trusted them, because then it would be out there in the uni-verse.

But even just keeping it to myself I did not want it to be true or to acknowledge it. I loved her being that physically close to me. The tingling feeling really disturbed & confused me when I would occasionally feel it around her. She would also give me a racing heart sometimes, not because of anxiety, but thrill. I would be giddy & ecstatic seeing her across a street, walking or talking to someone. She definitely gave me feels.

I was jealous of the people who knew her outside the very limited context I did. I remember feeling real jealousy that they got to know & love her while I just lurked on the sidelines and hid in the shadows secretly pining for her. I would have loved to be anything to her, a friend, an acquaintance, her life partner. When I would see her with coffee or lunch, I thought about how lucky the servers were to get to interact with her even if only briefly. She was that amazing to me.

She was a bubbly, energetic person who could brighten anyone’s day or uplift any mood, like one of those energizing “feel good” songs that make you want to get up & dance whenever it plays. She was my sunshine. I kept trying to come up with a way I could make contact with her and get her into my world, but I was too shy. And that is the story of my life. Lol

I loved her deeply right away & wanted her in some intimate way that I could never express. I thought of her as my baby, and every love song reminded me of her. She was the first thing on my mind waking up & the last thing falling asleep. I wondered what she was up to, thought about when I would see her again, fantasized about becoming so close to her.

I was thrilled when I knew I would see her again. I found myself dressing to attempt to impress her. I wanted her to like me like I liked her & think I was beautiful. I don’t fully understand what sexual attraction is or feeling “horny” because I never developed those feelings. I can only imagine.

So all life long my brain has compensated for the lack of understanding by focusing on the aspects that I do understand or experience myself, like thinking someone is breathtaking and wanting to stare. I wanted her to want to stare at me, thinking I was breathtaking. I did not realize it could make her “horny.” Lol

People ask me why I would dress the way I do if I don’t want s*x or don’t feel sexual attraction. It’s because I experience the aesthetic aspect of it. Beautiful women, including myself, intoxicate me, but they don’t make me horny. So I was trying to get her to feel the same feeling I have when I see a beautiful woman. I knew gay people are sexually attracted to people of their own gender & it has something to do with hooking up & liking how someone looks, but I never understood in an organized way what it means, the underlying phenomena of it. My understanding was vague & mechanical, logical.

Like, my friend dates/looks at other men because he’s gay. Gay means sexually attracted to people of your own gender. So my friend is sexually attracted to other men & loves to look at them. That much I knew, but I had no idea what the underlying thing is going on, what sexual attraction feels like, what it even is. My brain summed it up to basically loving how someone looks, but I still sensed there’s more to it.

My love for her was all-encompassing. I thought of her in every single thing I did. I was cr@zy for her. She was the love of my life. I wanted her so desperately, & eventually, I could not imagine life without her.

“I’m not your lover,
I’m not your friend,
I am something that you’ll never comprehend” Prince

Prince’s lyrics really resonated with me then because the love I experienced for her was so fierce and passionate, and all-consuming, that it truly was hard to comprehend. I thought she could never grasp the depth & intensity of my love for her. I remember feeling that I would never be able to explain adequately enough for her to understand it, even if given the opportunity. I felt there were no words. I also remember being jealous of my own love for her because no one loved me that fiercely and maybe never would.

That was a prominent thing on my mind back then that I totally forgot about until writing this. Remembering that feeling now is so familiar, like a long lost friend, a feeling like how did someone get so lucky to be loved to this depth & wishing I had that love lavished onto me. It was not arrogance at all, but I remember thinking in a detached way how lucky someone is to be this loved by someone else, & not just a feeling, but there isn’t a thing I would not have done for her, even if it meant I had to lay down my own life in an instant.

I felt I would have her back & cheer her on all life long even if we weren’t in touch. And I knew then the love was unconditional & lifelong (and it is). It wasn’t an everyday kind of love. It was a love that felt like a comet hit the Earth. It’s something I wasn’t accustomed to.

I would imagine us walking around together late at night in center city, Philadelphia, looking at all the buildings. Going to restaurants and sitting on the same side of the table. I always thought that’s adorable when I see happy couples sitting on the same side, in each other’s faces, even when it’s just them. I always wanted that with someone. I saw us sitting together, discussing law & politics & psychology & philosophy. I imagined us going to events around the city & having a group of mutual friends and us being the main two, the closest ones.

Sometimes I would daydream of her having a girlfriend but being closer to me. Lol I had no idea I was fantasizing about emotional cheating. That wasn’t my intention. I simply wanted her as my close cuddly friend, as mine, but knew people usually have a romantic partner, so I just casually imagined that aspect in my daydreams.

In my dreams we would curl up together on a sofa, our bodies touching while we talked or watched movies. I would imagine her having bad days so I could hold her all night and caress her cheeks & hair. Sometimes, I would imagine us arguing and then making up with long, loving hugs. She often got into tiffs with people because of her insulting sense of humor.

She got a kick out of taking playful jabs at people, sometimes quite tactless, something I’m not a fan of but could tolerate in her. She always apologized more than once if someone was truly offended & said she felt terrible, it was genuine. She loved tasteless jokes. She would say things like “boo-hoo, cry me a f*cking river” if someone complained about something she found petty, especially something political. She ragged on Republicans.

I would imagine us being very emotionally & physically close. I did not have the nerve to daydream about (nonsexual) physical things with her. I never imagined her with no clothing, it never even occurred to me. I genuinely wasn’t interested. Thoughts about tenderly touching her would pop into my head, and I would instantly banish them. I imagined our faces touching, lips brushing each other’s, my hands cupping her cheeks, sliding up her shirt to gently rub her back, her hand in mine, caressing it, holding her close. My body would melt at the thought.

Then I would tell myself I can’t be gay, it wasn’t happening. So sometimes I would imagine her having a bad day (sometimes she did seem a bit dejected but was usually very cheerful) & me holding her close to comfort her. It was my excuse to imagine touching her without being gay about it. LolΒ

I would imagine her falling asleep in my arms & me running my fingers through her hair. I would tell myself I was going overboard with the fantasies for a “hetero” girl. I imagined nonsexual sleepovers, us falling asleep together, me holding her, my arms wrapped tightly around her, never letting go. My fantasies felt “too gay” even though they were never sexual. I knew people would think that if they knew, and I struggled with anxiety even though no one could find out. The biggest insecurity was that it was not as valid according to society because it was nonsexual.

The thought of me possibly being gay was stressful; there were occasions when it was low-key traumatic. But me being nonsexual was the biggest insecurity & stressor of all. It was mortifying & filled me with fear in every conversation with friends or peers, afraid they would catch on, but lying about having desire/experience felt so off and unnatural to me. I never heard of such a thing as me and thought I was the biggest fr3ak of nature.

I internalized society’s messages about people who are different & about romantic/sexual feelings being most important. Back then I never heard of asexuality. I had no idea there are more people like me. I had no idea how to even explain what I am; I could tell it runs so much deeper than a dysfunction & just “not wanting s*x.” It’s an ingrained part of me since birth. I couldn’t articulate it. The lack of that aspect did not make my love for her any less like society would have us believe.

I would imagine me buying her gifts, like cupcakes & coffee. I imagined her causally taking a swig of the beer she loved as we hung out on some apartment balcony in center city late at night, surrounded by the city lights, laughing about everything. In my mind, we listened to Phil Collins, George Michael, Billy Ocean, Hall & Oates…all night long & danced under the stars to our 80’s songs.

Now I understand that she would never have been interested in an 18-year-old anyway. When I was 30 years old, an 18-year-old wouldn’t even catch my eye or cross my mind. The age difference itself isn’t a problem; it’s not even that significant, but my age was a kid age. But at 18 years old I did not realize that. I couldn’t have cared less that she was 30 years old or even 50 years old. I just liked her, & that’s all that mattered.

Over a year later, after not seeing her anymore but knowing she was around still, I randomly saw her walking into the building where her work office was. I did not know she still worked there, but I did know she was still around that location even when I no longer saw her. I knew I could run into her again & had so much hope that I would.

I found myself going out of my way just to see her, going into the building when I had no reason to, & walking by her office to catch a glimpse. I would see her in professional mode in her glasses, shuffling papers around her desk, sometimes writing something down, pulling things out of a filing cabinet, talking to people, laughing & joking, & drinking coffee. And oh how it thrilled me. Every little thing she did amazed me, even the most mundane things. I loved her laugh. She intoxicated me. She had me spellbound.

I would walk by & listen to parts of her work conversations, not to hear what she was saying, but to hear her voice & that laugh. It was only for a few minutes, then I would leave. But it brought me so much joy. I secretly struggled with depression & su*cidal thoughts off & on. Sometimes just thoughts of her would ground me & keep me here when I really began to contemplate. She was my glimmer.

I used to walk to the subway sometimes right before seeing her & try to get up the courage to go when the train would come. I would get so close to the edge, & when the train would come speeding, I lost my nerve and would step back. Then I would see her & thank the heavens above that I stayed. Just a glimpse of her was enough to make me want to live. You never know who you may be helping or inspiring just being you.

I would run up like 14 (maybe more; it was like 20 years ago; my memory of some details is a bit hazy, lol) flights of stairs in my stilettos just to see her. I am claustrophobic (it’s dormant now but was active back then) & was afraid of the elevators. Her office was right there near the door at the top of the stairs. Her door was always open.

I used to have to open the door slightly & peer through to make sure she wasn’t walking out of her office as I was walking into the hallway because she did know of me (though I’m not sure she remembered me, my hair was so long that it stood out, people would stop me on the streets to comment on it, so that maybe could have given me away πŸ˜†), & I had no reason whatsoever to be there. I hoped the same people wouldn’t see me lurking around every day lol

It would have been awkward to come face to face with her like that, & I would have had some explaining to do. I wasn’t about to utter the truth, “Oh, I’m just lurking around stalking you because I’m in love with you.” She basically had no clue who I even was. She knew me a year before but only in a superficial way. I was just background noise to her. (I’m literally laughing out loud as I’m writing this and imagining that 🀣) πŸ˜† Her back was to her door & to the side.

Thankfully, she never turned as I was running by every day. Creepy, I know. I would like to give the excuse that I was practically a kid, but I’ll admit that I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same now at nearly 40 years old if I met another woman & became absolutely whipped (and I can just as easily run up 14+ things of stairs today lol) πŸ˜‚

She was a gay rights activist and openly gay. We chatted occasionally but were never friends or acquaintances. When her hand accidentally touched mine (and it was definitely not intentional, lol. She had zero interest in me – actually, one day she did affectionately touch my arm, but not that way), my whole body got warm fuzzies.

She asked to borrow my pen one day and then stopped writing and touched my arm to ask and make sure she wasn’t making me late for somewhere. She wasn’t, but even if she was, I would have said no. πŸ˜† That warm gesture, I knew it did not mean much to her; I wasn’t delusional; it wasn’t personal on her part. But it stayed with me for a while. I felt that it really showed how caring she was.

I did not know her extremely well or know her very long. But I knew enough. She was outgoing but not a very open person with people in general. She said she was generally selective of who she opened up to. But I got a good idea of her general temperament, some of her life & career goals, & her sense of humor; she was very easily amused & lighthearted like me. She had very Liberal/progressive/feminist/atheist views, like me, volunteered at Democratic political events and the polls at every election.

She was anti-d3ath penalty & pro-choice. Very intelligent and intellectual, loved to read and discuss educational topics. She liked the same tv shows as me. She had a master’s degree & was working to get a phD. She loved to read educational texts just for fun. I also do! We had the same interest in topics like law & psychology. I would buy law textbooks at used. bookstores to impress her in case we became friends. lol I used to buy them just for me to read also, but I remember going out of my way and buying more, imagining how impressed she would be.

She looked “rough” on the outside or had a “rough around the edges” air about her & used the word “f*ck” a lot just in her general conversations and was sarcastic & outspoken. But she had a softness about her, a sensitivity; she was deeply compassionate for humans & animals and very kind, humble, loved kids.

There was a gentleness in her interactions with others. She called people “love” & “hon.” She was a softie inside, a fact that wasn’t evident at first glance and may not have ever been detected by people not particularly intuitive or not paying attention. I loved the combination of her bad@$$ery and warm softness. It suited her well. In a way, I knew her in a deep way, enough to know I truly loved her and wanted to spend forever with her.

I knew she was genuine, a good person; I would trust her with my life, my bank account, my secrets. But in another way, I only scratched the surface, most of what I knew was superficial. I knew she loved Jack Daniels beer and cheesesteaks and 80’s music (me too with the 80, lol. I am a vegetarian, though, so no steaks for me, also I’m not into alcohol, but we did have a lot in common also).

Another thing I knew about her is that she knew since she was little that she’s gay but kept it a secret until after she graduated undergraduate school because of fear of homophobia. Another gay woman she met inspired her to “come out.” I thought she was the most perfect amazing person I ever met. I ached for her, for her companionship, for her love. Back then I loved her more than anyone.

One day, someone said something homophobic to her, and she got very, very worked up & defensive and asked him how he (a nonwh!te man) liked it when he heard racist remarks & explained that’s how it feels to gay people hearing homophobic stuff. I wanted to walk over and hug her. I felt so guilty (and to this day, still do) for not defending her and all gay people. I felt very defensive of her. But I just stood there frozen in place, not able to open my mouth and speak up.

I remember this extremely self conscious, anxious feeling come over me, that he was going to think I was gay and target me next. There was no reason at all that he would think that, but I was self conscious about possibly being gay. I did not exactly think of myself as gay but still felt att@cked. He apologized to her.

She wanted to get married & have kids. Something I never wanted. So we weren’t compatible as life partners. I still wanted her though πŸ˜† This is one indication that what I experience is lesbian oriented aromanticism (it’s a thing) and not exactly homoromanticism. Romantic attraction doesn’t usually have this boundary.

Romantic attraction often inspires feelings of wanting to build a life together and share every aspect especially things involving kids (or not having kids) and a home. For me it’s more about an intense emotional connection especially, and an element of sensuality and some unity, but overall separate lives but with the same level of importance to each other and emotional investment as romantic relationships.

I would have given my whole life to & for her. If I had to give my own life to save hers, I would not have hesitated. I would listen to this song by Prince over & over thinking about how it describes me and my love for her so so well. I’m not your lover, I’m not your friend….I am something that you’ll never comprehend…I did not want to date her or hook up with her, but I wanted to be her everything. And she was already mine. I wouldn’t have minded if she had a girlfriend and wanted to be close friends with me even if it wasn’t as close as I wanted.

I wanted to spend life together and see each other everyday, share whole nights together, but not β€œbuild a life” together or make big life decisions together. So her wanting kids did not matter to me because they wouldn’t be my responsibility. But now I know if we were as close & invested as I wanted to be, it would be expected of me to be closely involved with them too.

Since she’s a gay woman, she would be expecting a relationship where I would be the other mom. But before I fully understood how romantic relationships/feelings work, I wasn’t thinking of that. I was just thinking we would be each other’s person with separate lives. I thought she could have a wife/family along with me but separately, not thinking it would not be practical/ethical if they aren’t polyam.

I imagined her having a girlfriend or wife just because that’s how life usually works, it’s something everyone does. So when I would daydream or imagine life with her, I kind of causally imagined the wife, which she did not have yet, taking the back burner and her and me being each other’s main source of emotional connection and happiness & by each other’s side always, spending nights together connecting and talking about everything & nothing, being each other’s “date” to everything. While the wife just existed. Lol

I did think about how it would be very unlikely to meet someone who loves me as much as they would love a romantic partner or even more and be as close to me or even closer, but still thought there could be hope (not realizing it would be unethical/emotional cheating on the wife. Because it’s not sexual/fully romantic, I thought it was ok, now I know it’s not).

Years later after conversations with people and thinking it through, I realized I was actually kind of imagining these women I loved or a future one I hoped to meet as loving me romantically because unconsciously or on some level I kind of knew that’s likely what it would take for them to feel as close to me as I wanted, and I just imagined their romantic partners as like filler people in the background. I began to understand that’s not how that would or should work.

I remember telling my mom before that I want a gay girl best friend and her asking why her sexual orientation matters and me having no idea what to say and feeling cringey for saying that. I realize I knew on some level a β€œgay girl best friend” could potentially be closer than a hetero best friend. I also would love a regular best friend of any orientation or gender. But what I was describing to my mom is even closer and more invested, and I did not consciously realize. I also remember thinking I would like to have a gay girl roommate and “accidentally” fall asleep in bed together. 🀣

A few years ago after conversations with a few people explaining how monogamous romantic attraction/love/relationships work, I realized that a woman is not likely going to have a girlfriend or wife and be able to be that emotionally invested in me and available to me. I remember the sinking feeling when I was told that when someone is in love with someone or even just very into someone romantically, if they aren’t polyam, they don’t usually have any kind of real feelings for anyone else that way.

It just hit me that the only way a woman is going to be that close to me is if she’s romantically interested (or is like me, which is very hard to find), but then if that’s the case, she’ll want more (sexual) than I can give and would probably lose interest in me with me not being completely compatible.

I kind of already knew this on some level, but now saw it at a different angle or on a more conscious level or more defined way or saw it in a different light. I always knew I would likely never be someone’s person, someone’s love. And that has always wounded me off & on throughout life, and now it hit me so hard that I fell into a deep month-long depressive episode when it registered that I may never have the woman of my dreams. And not in the way everyone these days feels they’ll never find their person because dating is just so hard and people just s u c k now but because of the way I’m made. I’m compatible with almost no one. Like most, I only love one woman at once like this but can have multiple close friends.

There are people out there who are like me, and there are people who are not like me but would give up some of what they desire or crave for a relationship with me that I want and still be overall happy & fulfilled. But they are hard to find. And I would never expect someone to settle for me. It would have to be someone who genuinely sincerely truly feels I have something invaluable to offer & would not be essentially less happy with me than someone more compatible even if there’s a lack of something. I can initiate & reciprocate verbal, emotional, physical affection in ways that could feel/appear to be romantic, but I’m not like the average person in terms of sexuality.

It can wear on my sense of self esteem/worth knowing that romantic/sexual relationships are most important in life and not being cut out for them because of the way I’m made and knowing that someone is either going to have to reject me or settle for me. Likely, anyone who ever loves me will always be settling (if it’s romantic) or love someone else more (if platonic). I will never be someone’s person, someone’s top priority. And even if so, there will always be another equally beautiful woman out there who can give her all that I can & everything I can’t.

I wouldn’t mind at all if she has sexual encounters with others, but most are monogamous. I would feel I’m holding her back. It can feel like she’s neglecting/lowering herself, with me enabling it.

It’s like being a half-baked lesbian, a fake gay woman, a cheap knockoff of the real thing. This is only a thought that pops up occasionally, I don’t dwell on it, but it’s unpleasant and toxic to me when it “rears its ugly head,” especially when it’s accompanied by depression.

Asexual people are often told that we are selfish & unfair for wanting a close emotional & physical but. nonsexual relationship, that we aren’t deserving of it because no one can possibly be happy & fulfilled with us even if they say they don’t mind.

The truth is, though it’s exaggerated, I believe there’s a shred of truth to it. Some can be happy & fulfilled with an asexual person & essentially no less happy, but something will always be lacking for them even if it’s not significant enough to really affect them. Still there’s a lack. I either have to selfishly accept they are lacking something with me or never have a close relationship like that.

Knowing this can sometimes wear on my sense of self-worth, knowing I’m inherently not enough, could never be enough, & that I’m not worthy of that love & closeness because I was born lacking a nearly universal, primitive drive that is considered fundamental to being human & essential to the most important relationships.

I have a diagnosed depressive condition. Because I already have this condition that comes & goes, I began to have su*cidal thoughts not just because my dream felt shattered, that too, but because I felt so inadequate and inherently unlovable and unworthy. And I felt like I have been going through life all along not knowing or fully understanding how it works, how normal people operate. I felt subhuman, not only not experiencing but not even truly understanding basic or primitive feelings that are nearly universal, that even children experience & understand.

Being aromantic & asexual since birth can make it hard to understand the nuances of romantic & sexual attractions and relationships even after we learn & grasp the concepts, intellectually. Sometimes it can be hard not to feel so broken in a world that centers around romance & sexuality and expects everyone to have those experiences and values them above all else.

I have often felt invalidated and inadequate when I would hear comments saying or implying that romantic relationships/life partnerships necessarily involve a sexual aspect. I want a relationship with the same level of importance & investment but without the sexual aspect, & always hearing that sexual feelings & activity are necessarily part of that or that sexual activity & feelings are needed for two people to be as close as they can possibly be can make it seem like I’m broken inside or that any relationship I would ever have wouldn’t be as real or valid. Or that if I meet a woman who loves me and feels close to me it still wouldn’t be to the extent as if it was a relationship with a sexual aspect.

I don’t believe it genuinely. There is no doubt two people can be in a nonsexual relationship that is just as loving and fulfilling and happy and intimate as a sexual relationship but without that aspect. But still hearing certain comments and just being so different in that way, it can be hard not to internalize it and feel inferior or broken or not good enough.

These comments & messages by people and society as a whole are not necessarily said to me directly or said about me or asexuality itself, they’re just comments or reflections in conversations or sometimes personal development or relationship books. It’s just kind of understood in U.S. society that sexual relationships are the closest and most intimate. As someone who longs so deeply for a deep, emotionally intimate, relationship it’s hard to hear those mundane comments strongly implying or saying that sexual feelings & encounters are the closest someone can be to someone else & most important.

There are remarks/sentiments I have heard all life long, like to make sure you “test” sexual activity before getting married/moving in together/committing because it will be a “waste” or you’ll “have to cheat” later if they’re lousy at it. As an asexual woman it’s disheartening to know that no matter how loving and affectionate and caring I am none of that matters, my personality doesn’t matter, nothing about me matters, I’m a waste or deserve to be cheated on because of the one thing I was born lacking.

It truly can feel like nonsexual people are inferior or inadequate, not cut out for what is considered the most important kind of relationship in life & lacking what is considered the most important feelings. I don’t think people who are not asexual would understand the feeling of hearing that we’re a waste, that the whole person has to be rejected or thrown out because of that one thing we lack. It’s completely valid to require compatibility in that way in relationships, but it’s also valid to find that it cuts or stings to know that’s the general sentiment.

It’s an insecurity that, when it flares up, can permeate every other aspect of life, making it feel like I’m less as a whole woman, a whole human, like nothing else about me matters because I lack what is considered the most important feeling/inclination, like I don’t matter anywhere, at work or in friendships, or in anything I do since I’m not adequate for what is socially considered the most important kind of relationship & no one could ever want me. It doesn’t matter if I’m a good friend, a good employee, a good person when I’m not good enough for what society values most. It has triggered su*cidal thoughts & urges in me.

There’s also the infantilization of people who don’t have those feelings or don’t have any/much romantic/sexual experience. I have been told that I can’t have an opinion on anything because I don’t have adult feelings or experience & can’t be taken seriously. I have seen people say the same about the Pope/religious people who are celibate & just people who don’t have much relationship experience.

This has occasionally provoked feelings of not being a real adult or real woman or real person in me, feelings of being a useless member of adult society, like I have nothing to contribute, am just one-dimensional, nothing of substance. When my depression flares up with su*cidal urges, this can push me over the edge.

It’s painful to always be erased, overlooked, not believed. It’s no one’s fault if they never heard of us, but to have everyone, including healthcare workers, assume everyone is sexual/heterosexual is suffocating. It’s like being an irrelevant person.

And yet I wouldn’t change my asexuality even if I could because I am made this way, and that itself doesn’t hurt me.

Also, I am wounded, in a way I can’t explain, by the fact I had to suppress my love for other women & live in fear because of a society that is so unaccepting.

I have longed so deeply for a relationship that is just as invested as romantic with some of the nuances. For a love that deep & central to our lives, for my person where we are so close there has never been anyone closer. For a warm tender love that has the core touch of a lover but isn’t quite one, though is beyond typical friendship. I’m not your lover…I’m not your friend… I would Die 4 U.

I saw a YouTube video where a woman was talking about her wife’s su*cide. She said in the beginning, her friends & family were there constantly with her, providing love & support. But it began to fade; everyone went back to their own lives, which is completely valid and expected. Even a close best friend has to get back to her own life. But a wife or girlfriend would still be there if someone close to you dies. She wouldn’t have a different life to get back to if your brother or mom died. You would be her life. She would still be there weeks, months, years later helping you cope in ways even your closest friends & family wouldn’t be.

This is the kind of relationship I have always wanted, the kind where I am important enough to someone that they wouldn’t have another life to get back to. It’s just one of the nuances of a romantic relationship that platonic doesn’t have. I would not expect this of a typical platonic friend. I have just always hoped to meet a woman where we happen to have this inclination for each other. & it hit hard when I consciously realized it’s even less likely and more complex than I thought since I lack some of the feelings that usually go along with this. I used to fear that expressing this would come off as clingy (or gay – and I wasn’t ready to face the homophobia) & that I would be judged for it.

This woman, I loved in a way that I wanted her by my side for life, every day, as close as two people can be. I only knew her briefly and never saw her again. But it was true, passionate love. I still think of her occasionally and those days.

One day, 18 years ago, two years after we met, when I randomly saw her out walking, I decided to walk up and say hello. I’m not outgoing, and we hardly knew each other. When I got up to her, I lost my nerve. She had her back turned to me, walking. I walked right up to her back & was going to get next to her when suddenly she stopped and looked into her bag. I abruptly stopped as well, then walked around her and stopped in front of her, hoping that she would say something to me & we could possibly exchange phone numbers. I looked back at her, but she did not acknowledge me at all. She walked around me and kept going. That was the last I ever saw her.

I remember suddenly becoming very conscious of my hair, thinking she would remember me by that but apparently not. Or I was so insignificant to her that she did not see any reason to communicate with me. If that is true, it wasn’t rude or negative. We likely all have people who aren’t essential in our lives & wouldn’t necessarily go out of our way to talk to them even if we saw them.

The last memory I have of her is watching her walk away in a long Winter coat as I stood feeling so very unimportant, alone, & empty.

She was so much more important to me than I was to her. I got this sinking & empty feeling. I did not have any main/close friends. Her not acknowledging me added to my loneliness. Once in a while that love & longing for her would rekindle even after not seeing/hearing anything of her for years.

I knew I would not be seeing her anymore because she was getting a new job. I experienced grief almost like when someone dies. I remember the empty feeling and the deep grief when I walked by her office and it wasn’t her at her desk but someone else. I already knew it and walked by just to confirm, but it still hit me hard. The pain was so intense I felt the need for some kind of instant relief. It was throbbing. My entire world felt empty & sinking because for two years I built it around her & the hope that she would someday be mine. And then she was gone. I was gutted.

For a while after not seeing her anymore I would actively love her & long for her companionship. Time & distance gradually faded that longing, the love became dormant. Eventually, she became just a pleasant thought that pops into my head now & again through the years. I never forgot her or the impact she has on me. I cherish the memories.

There have been occasions, even years later, where I experienced a wave of sadness that we never got to be friends & all the years of knowing each other were missed.

I can still imagine loving her like that today. I recently saw her on social media (we’re not friends), she’s just as amazing as I remember. I have the same love for her I did back then but not the invested kind I experienced then. It’s very warm, deep love but now lacks the intensity & physical aspect of back then. She’s happily married to a lovely fem girl, for years. They have a college aged daughter, pets, very successful, got the phD she was working on. Her & her family are happy & are surrounded by close friends & family. I’m so very happy for her.

Those feelings of back then probably have potential to be rekindled if we got to know each other & she wasn’t married (not that it matters, she’s married lol And waayy out of my league, always was. I’m not interested anyway). She is still adorable, looks the same, same style, hair, personality. She is still a passionate lgbtq+ activist, her & her wife both. When I have that love for/emotional attraction to another woman, I can easily & happily be their friend, it doesn’t have to be the invested relationship I desire with them. I would love to be friends. But we are total strangers & really always have been.

I don’t belong or fit in anywhere in this sense. I am very attracted to the appearance of other women. My aesthetic attraction to other fem-presenting people is powerful enough to stop me in my tracks & inspire me to stare, feeling intoxicated. I experience a kind of emotional attraction to them that I don’t to men. I can imagine “coming home to” and sleeping in bed with another woman, touching in sensual ways.

Yet, I don’t belong in the lesbian community or lesbian groups because I don’t want sexual contact with them. I see frequently in lesbian groups online the women bashing women who don’t “give head” or don’t “scissor,” saying they’re really heterosexual women who are just using lesbians because they’re tired of men or that they’re a “waste of time” when they go on a date with them only to find out they don’t give it.

An essential part of being a lesbian & lesbian identity is the sexual aspect, & that’s completely valid, but it makes it feel so out of place to be an asexual lesbian. But I’m not heterosexual either in any way. There’s just no place in society for an asexual person in terms of sexuality/romance. And if we have aspects of another identity, particularly a queer one, it’s like our asexuality cancels it out according to society because the sexual aspect is so prominent for most and so valued by society that that’s what the whole identity is reduced to. Sometimes it feels like being basically nothing, and that’s an unpleasant feeling.

Even in the asexual community it’s often like being out of place because it’s full of people who love s*x & “normal” people who just lost their s*x drives because of aging/medications/menopause/stress…and call themselves “asexual now.” True, thoroughly asexual since birth people with the full ace experience are rare even within the community it seems.

People think that anything that doesn’t fit into the perfect uniform boxes that society created (gay, hetero, and cisgender) to shove us all into, so they can feel more comfortable & secure, is just some trend, us jumping on the bandwagon to try to be different, fit in with people who aren’t the norm, or rebel against society. But those strict boxes are social constructs.

Attractions & love are natural things, but saying everyone has to experience that & those experiences for everyone all have to look, feel, & be expressed exactly the same is unnatural. There will always be people outside of the norm who always existed but never had a label or organized community of people like them. People who do not fit inside those perfect boxes.

I never began getting crushes when other kids did; I hardly understood what a crush even is; I never had a first kiss because I have no inherent desire. I have never been on a date or saw anyone I was interested in taking on a date, I never looked at someone at any age & thought I would like to see them with no clothes on.

At every age & stage of life, I have struggled to understand what is driving all of this for everyone else. Since childhood til well over 30 years old. At every age I felt something is off with me & could never say what & was mortified because of what people may think or say about it, & tried my best to fit in by making up stories about having crushes on men.

I never truly understand what “horny” means and have always experienced confusion upon hearing the term “attracted to” or “sexual attraction.” I had no idea what that truly is because no one explains it because they think everyone will begin to experience it and just know. I used to Google “What does horny feel like” and “What does a crush feel like” even at 30+ years old.

It’s interesting because even though this experience was 20+ years ago, it’s still overall so vivid in my mind. And it’s still so profound. Certain minor details may be a bit hazy now, but I still remember all the feelings almost like I’m reliving them. I can still hear her voice & her laugh (I’ll admit I have {rarely} stalked her online since then, out of curiosity, and saw her in a couple of YouTube videos, so that helps πŸ˜† but even without that I remember her voice & laugh back then) The memories of her still feel so familiar, and this experience still feels like “home.”

Recently I walked to the place where I knew her all those years ago. Nothing to do with her. I was there for an event. I have only been there on a few occasions in the last 15+ years. All the memories and feels came flooding back. I could feel her everywhere. It was a mixture of beauty, & pain, joy, & a sense of loss & missed opportunity. It was an unbearable nostalgic feeling. It made me want to go back.

It inspired a brief sense of that yearning I experienced all those years before. I couldn’t tell if it was a yearning for her now or if it was a yearning for what used to be or for what never was but, in theory, could have been. But whatever it was, it was a large wave that crashed into me & washed over me when I walked the streets we walked along back then & remembered that feeling of potential that has now been crushed by time & distance & circumstance & age.

It was so powerful I felt I could buckle at the knees. I remembered being young & the youth I lost along with all the possibilities, I felt the remnants of the giddiness and laughter & joy and young love that I lived back then. I remembered how young she was back then and felt a kind of grief for all the young years we lost and missed out on together (even just as typical friends) and a hint of despair at the fact that back then our lives were just beginning and are now over half over.

I was reminded of the grim fact that if I am lucky enough to meet another woman I have this love for who loves me back, we’ll never have the chance to be young together & won’t have many years together or at least not younger ones. When you meet your person/people, whether platonic or romantic or whatever, back then, you have many years to be young & fairly young together & have memories of being young together years later. Meeting in older age that opportunity is lost.

It can be depressing when I’m in a certain mood. I have had thoughts like this before, particularly when I’m in a depressed or somber reflective mood, but it all hit me with such force then along with the breathtaking nostalgia and flood of memories.

I have experienced this for quite a few women through the years, but my experience with her is one of the most intense. I’m so lucky for the honor of getting to love her back then even if only from a distance.

This is how I love women in my aromantic asexual lesbian way. I decided to share just to put it out there &  in case anyone reads & can better understand what it’s like to be aromantic & asexual but also be oriented. I get many questions/insults by confused & judgey people. And in case anyone who can relate happens to read and understands themselves better or feels less like an outcast. Even many asexual/aromantic people don’t realize we can be oriented and are confused by their tertiary attractions.

This post is inspired by those Prince lyrics people were sharing about Prince not being your woman or your man lol Gives me chills. Seems this song is queer in more ways than one, sounds like he could be oriented aromantic/asexual & nonbinary πŸ˜† Maybe he’s the triple-A, aromantic, asexual, agender πŸ’š

Ramblings of a living kidney donor- frequently asked Q&A πŸ«˜πŸ’š

πŸ’šπŸ«˜

(Words are censored because I sometimes copy/paste posts off of Facebook to here or here to Facebook where certain words can get us a suspension or post removal. They can’t detect context. So I can be posting about donating blood. It will see blood and automatically detect it as violence. Also, I censor common trigger words that people with trauma history may see.)

Content warning ⚠️!!!!! There is a picture of a human kidney in this post!! It will gross you out lol It’s not a scan image, it’s the kidney after it was taken out of my body before it was sent to its new person. I asked the surgeon to take a pic for me πŸ˜†πŸ˜

Questions we get asked as altruistic/non directed/living kidney donors and my responses:

1.) What if your child/family member needs a kidney transplant in the future, and now you can’t give them yours? Would you regret it?

Nahh.

This is probably the most frequent question.

I could not regret saving/attempting to save a life. I did what I felt called to do when I did. And if someone in my family needed a kidney transplant after I donated to a stranger, I would remember that someone else’s family needed that kidney too and are no less worthy or less important than my family member. I wouldn’t be kicking myself wishing I held out knowing a whole other life is spared and enhanced. Of course if my family member needed a kidney transplant I would have given mine when I had two. But since that wasn’t the case, I wouldn’t regret it if it happens later. How could I regret someone else’s child, mom, grandad, sister, niece, best friend, husband….or just a person being alive??

And I would remember that there are kind people out there who would donate an organ to a stranger like I did and have hope that one of them would help my family member the way I helped someone else’s. I couldn’t imagine not helping someone when I’m passionate about it because maybe someone I know will need me later. That may never happen and then someone would be sick or dying, and I would miss the opportunity to get to experience being a living organ donor. It makes no sense to me to hold out for something that is very unlikely to happen when something is already happening now that needs tending to. Also, who is to say I will be healthy enough later? Health is so fleeting & fragile. I may not be qualified later if my family member needs one. People take good health for granted just assuming we’ll always be healthy. This question shows that in the assumption that I would still be healthy enough later to help a family member. I hope I will. But unfortunately there’s no guarantee. To be a living kidney donor, we also have to be financially fit enough and have appropriate life/work circumstances. At one point years ago my circumstances changed, and I wasn’t financially qualified or able to take off work for recovery and wasn’t sure when/if I would ever be qualified again. I got super lucky when things changed again for the better. There’s also no guarantee my financial/work/life situation won’t change again. I would miss my chance. I am nothing but lucky to have the gift of this very rare experience.

2.) What if your kidney goes/went to a Donald Trump supporter/Republican/some @$$hole?

πŸ€£πŸ˜‚πŸ˜†πŸ˜ As long as it’s not a Cowboys fan, we’re good!

Jk!

Altruistic or non directed kidney donation is certainly not for everyone. It’s not for the faint of heart. There are people who say they would love to donate a kidney to a stranger but are too afraid it will go to someone they feel is undeserving like people with certain political or religious views. I have read stories by people who donated their kidney but absolutely had to be sure it was going to someone who has Liberal political views like them or had to be sure the person has personality traits they like. They can’t be a non directed donor with this frame of mind. It can truly take a toll on someone emotionally to keep wondering if the person who has their kidney is worthy or if they find out who the person is and they don’t measure up to their standards. They have to go looking for a specific person in need and make sure that person measures up. I don’t understand it myself, I could never choose out of a list of people and decide someone is worthy of my kidney but someone else is not or prefer one over another out of multiple strangers, but whatever floats their boat, it’s their body and their journey, and their choice. If they want to save a life but only one they feel is worth it, that is valid. There is a website, MatchingDonors, where potential donors & recipients can browse and read profiles by people offering a kidney and needing a kidney. Like a dating website but instead of finding our perfect romantic match, we find our perfect kidney match. Their pictures show up and any information they share about themselves. I tried it years ago and couldn’t choose. I knew altruistic/non directed donation is for me or if I just happen to see one particular person in need. But I couldn’t choose one of many. I wanted to help them all. Some tugged on my heartstrings more than others. But I could never choose.

It takes a certain kind of person to donate to a random anonymous stranger we know nothing about. It takes more than just compassion. It takes a strong stomach and a certain way of thinking. We have to truly believe every/almost every life matters and detach. We have to accept that our kidney can be keeping someone alive we absolutely would not be able to stand if we met them. Someone with values or personality traits we abhor. We have to feel that we not liking someone doesn’t mean they are less worthy just because we don’t like them. We have to step out of that egoistic, self important way of thinking to be able to be ok with non directed donation. Self important /egoistic in this sense is ok because kidney donation is an act of kindness, not an obligation. It’s completely valid to choose who we would and would not donate to or not donate at all. But it is egoistic to a certain degree, to decide one person is worth it and not another, and it does require us to avoid that sentiment that someone is inferior or unworthy “because *I* don’t like them” because “*my* opinion of them is the one that matters.” If we cannot overcome that sentiment, altruistic kidney donation is not for us. You know how ticked off you are every single day on social media. I see it every single day, my social media friends furiously bashing people of different political or religious views, arguing viciously with people then blocking them and still complaining about them after they’re gone, mocking people they don’t like, even wishing d3ath on certain people, laughing at some people who died. Could you handle it if your kidney was in one of their bodies keeping them alive? My self proclaimed Liberal humanitarian friends relentlessly mock some famous people who die, often because they’re Conservatives, sometimes because they’re greedy billionaires.

What if instead of one of them dying, they were still kicking and with YOUR kidney? If they were healthy and thriving and going on doing whatever they’re doing because your body part is keeping them going? Just imagine. Like I said, it takes a strong stomach lol

The way I see it is that a whole person is just that. A whole person. There’s more to every person than just their views/religion, more than just the aspects we see and cannot stand. They have interests, roles they play to others, goals… whatever I don’t like about them is only one aspect. And someone else loves them just how they are. Why does me not liking them make them less worthy when someone else does like them? My opinion is no more important than the opinion of the person who loves them. Someone isn’t less worthy just because *I* don’t like the person. I may not want to be their friend or not want them in my space, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be their kidney donor.

For example, those Donald Trump supporters. They wake up and drink coffee every morning, they go to work, they laugh at jokes them and their friends tell each other, they walk their dogs, they take their son to a ballgame and take their daughter out to lunch. They go home at night and watch their favorite movie or read their favorite books. They feel the same exact pain you feel when they get injured or sick. They feel the same fear if a g u n is pointing at them or they’re diagnosed with a devastating illness. They have the same longings to love and be loved and to live. If you cut them, they bl33d the same red. They have a whole life other than whatever someone doesn’t like about them. Who is to say they don’t deserve to live it?

I am reminded of Jeremy Bentham asking

Can they suffer?

In terms of whether or not animals are worthy of rights.

“The question is not, Can they reason?, nor Can they talk? but, Can they suffer? Why should the law refuse its protection to any sensitive being?” – Bentham (1789)

To me the question isn’t, Do I like them?, nor Do I agree with them? but, Can they suffer?

Also, are you a potential organ donor? Does your ID say you’re an organ donor? If yes, you may be donating to someone you wouldn’t like some day. You think all your organs that can be donated are going to only people who you would like and agree with on everything there is to agree on? Think again lol (I would not knowingly donate my kidney to a cold blo0ded murder3r, or a known terr0rist or domestic abus3r or serious s*x offenders or someone who has a lot of power and would use it for destructive things,…I would not want to aid in or support their large-scale destructive actions/energy in the world, but if my kidney happened to go to one of them, I would not regret my act of kindness because at least I tried to help, and it doesn’t take away any of the kindness on my part, a loving act is a loving act, there’s two aspects to donating a kidney, the practical help it offers someone and just the fact we did something so amazing. If my kidney went to an a-hole, it’s still an amazing thing I did)

I do not have a preference. I’m a Liberal atheist. If I found out the kidney I gave away is now making pee in someone who is a Christian Conservative and goes around calling people like me “snowflakes” and “sheeple” and “libtards” and “woke” and “commies,” (πŸ€£πŸ˜‚) so be it. I’ll give you my kidney just before blocking you on social media πŸ˜†

To me, there is something beautiful about altruistic/non directed kidney donation. Not knowing, not caring who our kidney goes to because every life matters. So universal loving! Of course all kidney donations are equally beautiful. But non directed has this unique aspect to it.

The way I see it, what makes someone worthy of my kidney is the fact that they are suffering/have the ability to suffer, not that they agree with me on something or are a pleasant or kind or compassionate person. We all suffer or have the ability to suffer the same way irrespective of our views or personality traits or likability.

3.) What if you need a kidney transplant in the future?

I’m on the priority transplant list now, so if I ever need one, I can get one fairly quickly. Since I donated a kidney, I won’t have to wait years like the average person in need of a new kidney. I can get a living donor kidney within weeks/months very likely. Even if that wasn’t an option for me, I would have donated. The chances are very slim. And if it were to happen, I would deal with it just like everyone else who needs a kidney transplant deals with it. At least I would be able to say I’m sick because I took a chance and helped someone. So many are sick just because. I have a way better chance of being in a car crash, yet I still get into cars. And no one questions it. I’m much more likely to be a victim of g u n v!olence in the U.S than develop kidney failure, yet I’m out all day & night walking the streets of Philadelphia where g u n v!olence is rampant. And no one (except my mom) questions it or has an issue with it.

I’m rarely to never questioned on why I get into cars or don’t live in a bubble so I don’t get sh0t or ass@ulted or sick. But when it comes to a loving act of kindness to literally save a life, people question why I would or make remarks to say/imply that I shouldn’t have because of a risk to my own safety.

Someone may say getting into cars and going outside are worth the risks because it’s necessary, it’s needed to live life. This kidney transplant was necessary. It was needed for someone to live. That person is no less worthy or important than I am that my needs are worth certain risks but theirs aren’t.

πŸ’šπŸ’‹πŸ˜˜

4.) What ever possessed you to give your organ away to a stranger/to lay on an operating table and risk dying for a total stranger? (Or something of this sort, but “possessed” has come up a few times πŸ˜†)

The philosophy that every life matters and that if we have more than enough of something (money, health, resources…) it‘s an even greater gift to share that with someone less fortunate in that respect. Remember all deceased organ donors donate to strangers. And blood donors too. What’s the difference if I’m alive and donate to a stranger? I donate blood regularly to random strangers. What’s the difference? If you checked yes to organ donation on your driver’s license and you die in a way where you can be an organ donor, you’ll be doing what I did, donating to a complete stranger. Is that such a wild cr@zy idea? To reach out and help a fellow human?

🫘

5.) What if you suffer a complication?

I may or may not suffer a complication, but for someone else there is no maybe. A person on dialysis or about to begin dialysis doesn’t have the luxury of maybe that I have. They are already suffering a complication. I’m lucky & privileged to even have that “maybe.”

Also, I hope I would never not do something that deeply resonates with me because of fear. Avoiding things we’re passionate about because of fear, is no way to live, in my opinion. I prefer to take chances if it’s something I truly want and feel called to do and whatever happens happens than living in a safe bubble not fully living and then dying as an old woman. What if I did not do this and wouldn’t have suffered a complication? I would miss out on the experience and always wishing I chose to go through with it and wondering what if I did. It has been on my mind every single day for over five years and on my mind off & on for many years before that. It was never something I could ever regret no matter what. It’s my dream come true!

6.) “I would never give my kidney to a stranger/anyone, you’re a better person than I am.”

This is a response I have received by a few people.

No one is a better person for doing an act of kindness. “You’re a better person than I am” only applies, in my opinion, if you’re going around intentionally interfering with or hurting others while I’m not.

7.) Are/were you scared?

Yes!! It took brass ovaries, and I got’em. The two weeks before surgery, my body would be gripped in a sense of panic waking up in the mornings. Sometimes it would feel that “fight or flight” response. Occasionally it felt like it thought it was getting ready to die. Lol Dramatic. My worst, pretty much only, fear was that I would experience prolonged fatigue when I live a very active life. Thankfully got no fatigue at all! On the morning of the surgery, I woke up completely calm and peaceful & hopeful, no anxiety or fear at all walking into the hospital with my two kidneys getting ready to send one off to a great new home. πŸ’š

8.) What if you die/would have died on the operating table?

Very very unlikely. But what better way to go than in my sleep and saving someone else’s life? 😁

Scars n all πŸ’š
🩷

9.) Have you met/do you want to meet your recipient?

No, I haven’t. And not necessarily. I do not mind either way. I don’t have the burning desire or curiosity that many anonymous donors seem to have. For me it wasn’t a social call but an attempt to enhance & extend someone’s life. If they reach out to me ever, I will be delighted. But if not, I’ll live. Lol Each transplant center has their own rules for when an anonymous donor or recipient is allowed to contact the other, anonymously. Some have to wait up to a year. So my recipient may not be allowed to contact me yet. I was allowed to contact them right away but did not. I may send them a card for our first Kidneyversary next year to brighten their day. My transplant center would send it to theirs. Not knowing who they are or if they’re grateful does not lessen the joy of my experience. Occasionally I’m slightly curious of the age & gender of the person.

10.) Has your life changed since donating a kidney?

Only in my mind. It’s the most amazing experience, I am filled with joy & ecstasy. I understand the meaning of “intimate strangers,” knowing a complete stranger and me are the only two in the world to have had this kidney in our bodies, that we both laid on an operating table on the same morning to become connected to each other forever. I know that everywhere I go, I’m very likely to be the only one there with one kidney. Every room I walk into, I’m the only one there who gave a kidney away and knows this rare unique experience. It’s an isolated feeling but not in a negative way.

After two weeks I was almost 100% my usual self. I jokingly asked if they even took the kidney. After a month I was 100%. I would never know I only have one kidney or had surgery if not for my memories & the beautiful scars.

Here are the lifelong restrictions/lifestyle changes I was told by my team:

1.) No NSAIDS
2.) No natural herb supplements
3.) No supplements made outside the U.S.
4.) Blo0d pressure check every six months
5.) kidney function tests once a year
6.) Extra water

11.) Can you still have kids?

Yes! Having only one kidney does not affect fertility at all. It does make it a “high risk” pregnancy though, so for women/birthing people who donate a kidney and decide to become pregnant later, it’s important to let their healthcare team know so they can be closely monitored to prevent very serious complications to the woman and the unborn. With close monitoring it can be a safe & healthy pregnancy.

12.) Are you religious/was this motivated by religious beliefs? No, I’m an atheist. I don’t need a god or religion to be compassionate or empathetic. My basic humanness is enough. I have felt it as a deep calling, it felt like something larger than me working through me, which is a bizarre experience for an atheist. And I have received what many believers would call “signs.” But I don’t believe in that. It was my desire to help someone that inspired me, and the deep calling feeling was just part of my experience. I don’t believe that any supernatural being would have been disappointed or punished me if I did not go through with it. And I don’t believe it scored me points with anyone or is my ticket into Heaven or some other afterlife. I just wanted to help someone!

πŸ’š

Living organ donation isn’t for everyone. These are just my experiences not something that everyone should feel for themselves. For me, living kidney donation truly felt like a calling. It was the easiest decision of this life of mine. I truly experience more stress trying to decide what flavor ice cream I want or if I want tea today or an iced latte πŸ˜‚ No hesitation, no uncertainty whatsoever. I knew since the day I read a heartwarming story 15+ years before my donation, about a man who donated his kidney to an anonymous stranger, that I would one day do the same. I am 100% happy & thrilled with my decision. πŸ’šπŸ«˜

Anyone interested in living kidney donation can check these out:

National Kidney Registry (the National Kidney Registry offers donor benefits like reimbursement for lost wages during recovery and travel/lodging expenses if necessary and a place on the priority list on the off chance the donor ever needs a kidney transplant in the future, also a kidney voucher for a friend/family member {or anyone} of the donor, so if someone they know ever needs a kidney transplant, since the donor donated to an anonymous stranger, they’ll let one person of the donor’s choice get a kidney transplant without waiting long, I donated my kidney voucher to another stranger, so two people are being helped through my one kidney donation)

Matching Donors (this website provides pictures and stories by people in need of a kidney transplant. Potential donors & recipients can browse and communicate with each other. A donor can choose to try to help a specific person, they may not be a match. But if they’re both associated with the National Kidney Registry, the donor can do a non directed donation and donate the voucher to the person they found on Matching Donors – this isn’t just for kidneys but other organs we can donate while alive also. Some people have donated their kidney AND a portion of their liver to different people {not at once lol usually have to wait around a year}! And it’s completely safe!)

Sending love to all!
